How difficult is NBA 2K23 for a newbie?

Like the title says, how difficult is 2k for someone who has never played a NBA game before?

I’m only a casual basketball fan and while I have a general understanding of the game I know nothing about offensive or defensive strategies.

I’m curious to try it out especially with the era’s they’ve added this year but if I’m going to be overwhelmed it’ll be a waste of money.

Any other newbie’s that can give me some feedback would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

I'm a pretty casual basketball fan and NBA 2k22 was my first basketball game. I'm having a blast with 2k23. You can have automatic play calling on and markings show up on the floor to show how you should run the play. There's also a pretty good tutorial to play while the game installs. Playing MyNBA has taught me more about basketball in general and how the NBA "works".

I will provide another perspective. I admit that people I tried to get to play 2k were not really bball players, but they had a REALLY hard time. They were expecting some NBA jam level stuff. If you wanna learn the game and maybe watch a couple YT vids, it is pretty forgiving, but if you go in without plays on even auto, like dude said, just trying to make something happen, you'll end up with a bunch of contested shots and getting blown out.

If you're talking next gen, there is a lot less "brick walling" of the defense which helps immensely. It's actual a more cerebral game than a stick skill game, though. Once you figure out how the game works, you can abuse it with stick skills, but if you go in trying to outplay the computer, it will punish you. IMO the computer actually gets 'better' when you take what it considers a bad shot, so if you are trying to go and do your little iso and hit a pull up and you miss, you can expect them to come down and either get a break or bang a 3.

If you truly are a complete noob, there is some level of learning required, but in my opinion, the lack of success of the people I tried to get to play had more to do with their inability to put in a little time and learn the game. If you compare it to something like NBA Live, though, yeah, it's way harder to learn.

I take it for granted, but yeah, don't expect to just go in and have everything working out for you. You're gonna have some growing pains. In the end, though, it's average to below average skill required to play competently. If you play online 85%+ of the player base can do basic scoring moves, altho... haha not many go beyond that. People have their meme moves and that's it. You almost never see a complex offense v defense battle 1 on 1, even though the depth of 2k allows it. It's just rare to have two players matched up that both have more than a superficial knowledge of the game.
