People's tastes vary, but you have the freedom with mods to easily mix and match different 3d models and face textures (they're separate files, so it's drag-and-drop). Here's what I personally use. I believe it's the face texture from the screenshot you replied to (or at least a different version by the same creator; I don't keep track of versions) on top of a 3d model by someone else. I think it's almost objectively true though that the face texture (the actual skin tone, texture, blemishes, etc.) is superior to the default 2K one; it's just significantly more detailed (because the 2K one is from like 2K19).

Uh, I agree that the 2K face scan is showing its age (still looks pretty accurate looking at a photo on Getty images). Those mods make Giannis look like he's in late 30's, though.

He doesn't look as "young" as the 2K default, anymore, yet sure as hell doesn't look as old as LeBron which those mods make him look like.

Another year where I'll wait game is $18 at GameStop then use $5 coupon to get it at $13. If you can't get the superstars head scans updated why should I pay you $75 for it?

I honestly never see much difference in the faces year over year. Compare to 5 years ago sure, but vs a year ago it looks identical lol.

That’s the problem. Some faces go untouched for 5 years in a row, due to 2k’s unwillingness to update anyone who won’t come and sit down for a scan.

I really think it mostly seems 'old' to you because 2K's lack of updating ends up conditioning us to calibrate our judgment to the default (so yeah, if 2K19 default angelic baby-faced Giannis is one's sense of 'normal', then something a million times more detailed is going to seem like when you catch a super magnified reflection of your skin in one of those close-up mirrors they have at the dentist's office).

I don't mean to talk down, because I had a similar reaction even on console going from 2K20 to 2K21 when 2K suddenly started doing new scans with greater textural detail, similar to that mod. See below for a few newer default 2K scans as an example. I remember thinking at first "Gah, I wanna go back to those old 2K20 textures; this is just detail for the sake of detail"... but after getting acclimated it was clearly an upgrade. If 2K were to update their scan, it would also look 'old' compared to the previous scan, because that's just the natural, gut inference one makes when going from baby-face skin to skin with actual imperfections. In other words, greater skin detail is 2K's ideal too, not just modders'.

PS: It's possible you just don't like the ReShade filter I'm using, which is sharper than default. It's also active in the default 2K screenshots in this post. (EDIT: Added a photo of that same Giannis mod at the free throw line, but without any ReShade filters -- just default. Sorry for catching him mid-blink!)

Re: NBA 2K24 Screenshots - LeBron, Joker, Durant, Curry & More

This is one of the only times I'll comment on any of this:

I've thought for years a big reason they struggle with some faces is the lack of depth/detail. The scanning definitely struggles around the cheek/eye area most likely due to the flashing from cameras. For some reason they don't seem to go in and refine it too much past the scan which leads to one being off until an updated scan happens after a few years of the tech improving (ex. Steph).

The funniest part about all this is they clearly can still hand mold players like they did before this tech existed pre 2k14. We've even seen it with some legends like they did with Jordan and Ewing in 2k23. But just like they did pre 2k14, they just completely leave certain star players completely untouched. Even if you can't get Jimmy Butler or Russell Westbrook in for a scan they could touch those models up. They introduce MyEras and yet T-Mac still looks derpy with no young model and how many years has Shaq looked like a Gerber baby now when you already have a head model from his older scan for the pre/half/post show?

Body models probably aren't gonna improve much because of all the animation rigging they have tied to the current ones. That's fine, but why takeaway the ability to alter wingspan, shoulder width, and waist height then?

When was the last time the creation suite for either courts/unis/shoes even touched? Accesories? Why not allow the ability for cyberface mods on console?

Anything art related has never been their strong suit. Live was always the leader in that department. They've improved over the years but it's still not at the level you'd expect or want in 2023.

I dunno what you mean about animation rigging, because even with all the body model tweaking that modders do, there's no adverse interaction with animations. But I absolutely agree with you that if 2K (1) enabled the wingspan, shoulder width, and body length (waist height) sliders -- as well as allowed a choice of generic body type, like Built, Burly, etc.) -- for ALL players, not just MyPlayer or Create-A-Player, and (2) allowed users to import face textures as images via the normal upload tool people use for custom logos, etc. -- if 2K did these two things, then in terms of the character models they would look damn-near as good as on PC. The only exceptions would be very old character models with derpy 3d designs, and even then a good face texture can work wonders. (On PC those 3d designs can be edited / replaced, but that can't be allowed on console because it's just asking for viruses / hacks to let people upload random computer files into a closed, console ecosystem.)

That's because those PC mods aren't actually creating entirely new body models. If they're gonna do it, I'm talking a full overhaul with the accuracy of something like WWE 2k. Also, those PC mods almost always lead to them clipping and/or other visual oddities that people would complain about (for us though it's obviously better than stock).

All that said, like I said, if they'd just left the body editing in that was there games ago I could at least give players more uniqueness. Guys like KD & AD the high waist, Ingram the wider shoulders, David Robinson more definition than someone like Pat Ewing even if they have the same weight/base body type, etc.

Oh, my bad, I read too quickly and didn’t catch that you hoped for improvement beyond enabling those body edit controls. I gotchu now.

What sort of clipping visual oddities do you see with cyberface mods though? I never see any clipping or other oddities that aren’t there at the same frequency in the default game. The only exceptions would be really over-the-top stuff like mascot-ish Super Mario cyberfaces and stuff, but that’s not really my jam.

Some modders miss it and other get it right.. Just the ability to customize the game is why i usually buy both version. because i personally get board the the lackluster atmosphere of 2k.. Something EA did very well.. but some these cfs are best I have seen.We do what we can to makeup for not getting full nextgen port to PC, IF they ever release it on pc, Its going to be gamechaging with some of the edits we can do.
