Haven't the developers over the years said there is nothing in the game that forces close games?

Personally, that complaint just speaks more about humans not able to deal well with randomness (there are interesting books on this subject) and looking for patterns when there really aren't any. It's likely that when people are ahead in the game, they're more likely to make mistakes.

I actually prefer more randomness in the game, because everything going deeper each year into being 100% skill based just takes away from basketball more. Truth is, plenty of the NBA (and sports) has been and always will be to some degree tied to randomness and variance -- without that, it'd be less exciting.

The answer that people won't want to hear is to decrease the number of tendencies.

Why? The more advanced you make this, the harder it is for roster makers (especially stock 2K rosters...) to keep up with it in a realistic manner. If someone is honestly looking at existing tendencies and coming away thinking "yeah, we need even more" honestly that sounds wild to me.

Roster updates already never touch tendencies throughout the year (except once at the beginning of a new release, and even then it's not in-depth). You think adding more is going to fix the problem? Even the top custom roster makers aren't going through tendencies to the fullest extent right now.

This is a problem with the series and expectations in general. People keep wanting more and more instead of being satisfied with refinement and polishing what is already there. It's the same reason why MyNBA has features that end up so half baked and at times broken (which has made that mode unplayable to me for years).

Same thing with badges. So many badges. Yet they won't be updated throughout the year cause the work ends up being too much.

There is definitely a thing of "too much". Diminishing returns etc.

There are some moves that are in the game that the AI doesn't use, so I think we definitely could use a few new tendencies, like the Kobe-esque shimmy fade off the dribble, stepbacks from a standstill sizeup (Harden), etc.

I firmly believe we can use new tendencies for the sake of realism, especially with how versatile current players are, and all the new moves/move combinations players literally invent in real life.

Right, in a perfect world 2K/Visual Concepts - and other sports video game publishers/developers - would figure out a way to better 'replicate' players without a ton of tendencies (while being 'under-the-hood' data driven).

Unfortunately, we don't live in that world and like you mentioned - as well as myself and others - the CPU just doesn't use a lot of advanced moves.

The CPU tends to play a specific way (starting PG's ball hogging and jacking up 3's) and that is likely hard coded into the game.

All we want is for the CPU to play more dynamically, use a lot more of the advanced moves (make them tied to the badges for the CPU like someone else mentioned), spread the ball around more, and 'feed the hot hand' like real life.

            1. They should catch up to the existing tendencies before they add new ones.

            2. They don't have a good way to replicate moves/combinations. AI doesn't understand the context of when to do it (heck, 99% of users don't either). Playing Street Fighter vs a human and vs the AI are two wildly different experiences. Now translate that to all the other moving parts of a basketball game.

            3. Tendencies are not a major budgetary focus because long-term it's going to be human players filling slots in the game modes they want you playing, not AI.

            4. Despite the criticisms and lacking updates, 2K's AI drones are already among the most sophisticated in gaming.

If I'm not mistaken, badges do affect tendencies. That part is actually fairly easy to program.

Something like: 5 pts Bronze, 10 pts Silver, etc being a bonus score added to an ability formula check

I hope 2k fixed/revamped the hostage dribble for 2k25 New Gen. Same for defensive outcomes on the defensive end.

I'm considering getting the PS4 version and hopefully it won't be digital like The Show.

I'll be ok as long as there will be roster updates and the City editions/courts etc. get patched in.

                          Fantastic. Quality > Quantity.

Relative to other roster editors, as someone who focused on badges and editing them for every single player in the league, it's going to make things a lot more straight forward.

How they tier/balance badges is going to be way more important than the sheer volume of them.
