I don’t get it. I mean he’s shooting better from 3 than he has his whole career, but he’s still only at 33% and trending down.

It won't change until Stauffer gets replaced.

Achiuwa hit one three since the last update. His 8th of the year.

Surely that's just an error? He hasn't even hit those eight at a good clip

He was shooting 42% from 3 up until this week, then he went 1 for 7 since and is down to 33%. That’s the problem with the ratings updates is that they are based on recency bias instead of the weighting it by previous career numbers too. He’s been better this year, but it’s in limited numbers and I’m pretty sure are only corner 3s.

Those seven attempts represent nearly 30% of his total attempts all season, which kind of underlines how ridiculous setting ratings on such small sample sizes is

2k just needs to factor in volume

I'm not sure why they do this. Gets us talking I guess.

                Not just volume:

                2024 3PT
                Malik Beasley: 224-542 FG (41.3 FG%, 95 AST%, 8.3 FGA/36)
                Trae Young: 175-470 FG (37.2 FG%, 34 AST%, 8.7 FGA/36)
                Duncan Robinson: 187-473 FG (39.5 FG%, 89 AST%, 8.9 FGA/36)
                Buddy Hield: 219-568 FG (38.6 FG%, 92 AST%, 9.5 FGA/36)
                Luka Doncic: 284-744 FG (38.2 FG%, 30 AST%, 10.2 FGA/36)
                Klay Thompson: 268-691 FG (38.8 FG%, 94 AST%, 10.9 FGA/36)

Two of these guys are not like the others.

All three factors are what make Curry the gold standard.

                Stephen Curry: 357-875 (40.8 FG%, 61 AST%, 13.0 FGA/36)

Given the importance and variance of the 3pt shot in modern offenses, it almost feels like just having an arbitrary rating is insufficient (I know badges and tendencies are meant to come into play here, and there's a whole lot of context that 2k seemingly ignores).

The corner three, the set shot three, the moving/dribble hand-off three, the pull-up three are all completely different shots now. You almost need a separate attribute for each.

Oh god. You think things are bad now, just wait.

If you recall when Stauffer first took the job they implemented "Moving Shot" and "Contested Shot" ratings. Instead of three shot ratings (Close/Mid/3PT) we had SIX (i dont believe Close existed yet), can you imagine having NINE. They were horrendous and discontinued.

IIRC all they did was give guys like Kobe 90/90/90 while someone like Derek Fisher would have been 80/70/70.

Badges are largely better at differentiating skill where a numerical grade is ineffective. Now in theory you could point to Edey's lack of shooting badges as all going according to plan, but the reality is this is a ratings based game and that number is the gauge players are using to determine whether they make that split-second decision to shoot when open, craft their offense around a player's ability, etc.
