Villanova moves on with 9 point win over Auburn. PF Jalen Porter finishes with 14 points and 8 rebounds; and SG Emmanuel Kittles adds 16 points in the win. Auburn SG Shariff Abdul-Rahman scores 26 points in the loss.
(4) Kentucky 83 – (5) UNLV 75
Kentucky SF Quincy Starks provides spark off the bench (15 points) to propel Kentucky past UNLV. Kentucky PG Keaton Walls finished the game with 11 points and 5 assists.
(3) Oregon 69 – (6) TCU 62
Oregon moves on to Sweet 16 with 7 point win over TCU. Oregon PG Rakim Lynch finishes with 8 points and 8 assists. PF Anton Basden grabs 12 rebounds and scores 17 points for the Ducks. TCU senior SF Bryant puts up 16 points in the loss.
(10) Texas 79 – (2) Wichita State 62
Texas upsets #2 seed Wichita State by 17 points, fueled by 10-0 run to start the 2nd half. SF Brandon Royal finishes with 13 points, 6 boards and 6 assists; and SG Joe Madison finishes with 21 points (5-9 3pt). Wichita State SG Elias Kidd ends the game with 16 points in the loss.
West Region
(1) Duke 83 – (9) Arizona 64
Duke drops Arizona behind freshman PF Micah McKnight’s big game, McKnight finished with 23 points and 9 rebounds; PG Darnell Rackley ended with 16 points, 8 assists and 4 steals. For Arizona, freshman SG Julian Thorpe finished with 17 points; and So. SF Kobe McCall had a team high 22 points in the loss.
(4) Notre Dame 68 – (5) Fresno State 64
Notre Dame moves on after narrowly beating Fresno State. PF Brent LaFrentz scored a game high 25 points for the Irish, he also had 11 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. For Fresno State, sophomore center Ace Washington ended the game as the Bulldogs leading scorer with 19 points; and PG Brey Alexander finished with 11 points, 5 assists and 3 steals in the loss.
(3) Rhode Island 62 – (6) Michigan State 61
Rhode Island hangs on against Michigan State. SF Denton Wayns had 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals; and center Brycen Holmes finished with 10 points and 16 rebounds in the win. Michigan State PF Kendrick Palmer finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
(2) Michigan 77 – (10) Syracuse 64
Michigan rolls past Syracuse, So. SF Kristian Price nails 5 3’s, and SG Laron Quarus adds 13 points and 3 steals for the Wolverines. Syracuse sophomore SG Nico Sosa led the way for Syracuse with 15 points in the losing effort.
East Region
(1) UNC 79 – (8) Florida 61
UNC’s depth too much for Florida. UNC had a great inside outside attack with AJ Matthews and Jerry Keefe hitting from the outside while Dalen Hold and Rashawn Franklin scored inside. Holt led the team’s balanced attack in scoring with 15 points. For Florida, freshman PG Maurice D’Angelo had an off night in a season plagued by inconsistent play, scoring just 7 points on a dreadful 3-15 shooting performance.
(5) FIU 77 – (4) Florida State 75
FIU and SG Jaykwon Owens gets revenge and knocks out Florida State on a go ahead 3 point shot by Owens with less than 5 seconds to play. FSU SG Avery Qualls missed a game winning shot on the ensuing possession. Owens scored a game high 34 points; and teammate Theo Phillips added 13 points and 9 rebounds. For FSU, SG A. Qualls ended the night with 16 points and 2 steals.
(3) Kansas 83 – (6) NC State 70
Kansas beats NC State with strong second half after trailing at halftime. Kansas center Corey Baldwin IV scored a team high 20 points, and grabbed 12 boards. PG Karim Inglish had 14 points and 8 assists for the Jayhawks. For NC State, junior PF Jarron Okoye finished the game with 13 points and a game high 15 rebounds—his play late in the season and in the tournament should help his draft stock.
(2) Cincinnati 70 – (7) Ohio State 67
Cincinnati holds on for the win after Ohio State came back from 17 down in the 2nd half to tie the game with under a minute left in the game. Cincinnati sophomore SF Lance Everett ended a 13-0 run by Ohio State that tied the game with a 3 point shot, and PG Marvin Selden Jr., hit some clutch free throws to seal the game.
Mid-West Region
(1) Gonzaga 74 – (8) Texas Tech 70
Gonzaga punches their ticket to the Sweet 16 with a 4 point win over Texas Tech. Senior center Raymond Mills had 16 points and 9 rebounds in the win. Texas Tech center R.J. Andrews finished the game with 13 points and 7 rebounds.
(4) Washington 73 - (5) Miami 67
Washington moves on after beating Miami by 6; SG D.J. Stokes finishes one 3-pointer away from tying the record for most 3-pointers made in a NCAA tournament game. Stokes was 10-15 on the night, one away from the record of 11 3’s. Stokes finished with 36 points, a new career high for him.
(11) Clemson 67 – (3) Xavier 63
Clemson with another upset, this time over #3 seed Xavier. Junior center Micah Stone had 17 points and 11 rebounds; and freshman Dominique Gomes finished with 15 points.
(2) USC 78 – (7) Indiana 63
USC moves on to the Sweet 16 with a 15 point win over Indiana. USC SF Kenyon Markota had a game high 30 points, he also had 8 assists. Indiana PF Brandon Fuller finished the night with 16 points and 8 rebounds in the loss.
