    Learning Play Sets

When playing do most of you play a structured game and run plays every time down, or mostly wing it?

If you run plays, what did you find to be the best way to learn and execute each teams plays? It seems like it would take a while.

    Re: Learning Play Sets

It depends on two things: The makeup of the team and how opponent is defending me. For teams without any real good/great one-on-one players, or for teams who have a strong post player, it's better to run more of a slower half-court pace and call a variety of set plays. Teams like the Jazz, Timberwolves and Pacers would fit this description. For teams who play at an up-tempo pace like the Suns, Warriors, Magic and Celtics, it's better to run an open court game as much as possible anyway... regardless of the defense. Plus I'll run after any forced turnovers, with any team.

If an opponent is constantly calling on presses and/or often trapping the ballhandler trying to hurry the pace of the game, then I'll choose to run a freelance offense and rely on Dual Player Control, icon passing and lead icon passing to get players to go where I want them to on the floor. The open looks will come a lot quicker and easier against a trapping defense without having to run set plays. You just have to find the right player to pass the ball to at the right time.

In situations where the only key dominant post player is out on one of the aforementioned slower pace teams (i.e. Kevin Garnett on the bench for the T'Wolves), then I'll try to run more often to get easy baskets because the team will likely struggle to get open looks running strictly half court play sets.

And learning to run an offensive play the way it's designed is easy. It's learning and exploiting all the alternative options within a single play (depending on how the defense is guarding you) that takes a while. The first option isn't always going to be available or give you the best opportunity to score if defended well.

when we get the ball up the floor slow, I usually run a play... either I choose one, but the Comp will pick one cause I have the playcalling on Auto w/ Message...

Even if I don't know the play... I wait for some movement to go on, maybe a screen being set, and I make the first pass... and then work it from there... it's not too shabby.

Thanks. That was very useful. I drafted a team, and I plan on making them a running team. I have Chris Paul at the helm, with Lebron and Jason Richardson on the wings. No point in running a halfcourt offense. I'll probably use a bunch of isolation plays and screens to open up the offense a little.

What kind of plays do you use when your player gets doubled when he touches the ball?

When you get doubled the best thing to do is isolations because then the floor is spread and there is no stupid movement by your CPU guys which will cause alot of turnovers....wing double teams are the easiest to get away from I suggest using some motion sets where there is a pick(sometimes a double pick) for yur SG/SF to set him up on the weak side of the floor by himself...look through L.A. Clippers playbook and Seattles for some of the motion plays I am talking about.

It helps so much to spend at least a half and hour memorizing your plays....I write them on a piece of paper and give a little description so I know where the play goes. its funner than it sounds!

Jotting them down on paper sounds like a good idea.

              I might try that.

How do I know who the primary guy is on each play. When should the shot be taken?

All the Iso/Take/Wing plays list the postional player in the play name. The one listed is who gets the ball as the #1 option of the play.

And when the shot should be taken depends entirely on how the defense is guarding you. It's hard to explain without any further details (i.e. which play is called, who's getting the ball, what defense is called against the play, what individual player is defending him if in Man-to-Man, etc.).
