                                            2) Use the Gradient tool and change the opacness in the top bar.
                                            3) Pick the color that you want to use
                                            4) Apply to the background

                                            It is hard to explain but if this does not work I can try to explain it better.

                                                And is it possible to do it 2 different colors, like half black and half yellow or something like that?
