They are able to pack a boat load of new animations into the game every year, that keeps the game fresh 'for me' all the way through the entire NBA season IRL.

I think ALOT of people have grown tired of the visuals though. There were rumors of a new graphics engine last year for 2k8, but that never happened.

The visuals have been probably the part of the game with the less upgrades, for those people with issues with the title getting stale.

However, it's good to hear that everyone who has seen the game (2k9) in motion has been VERY positive about the impovements of the visuals this year with the "2k HD feature".

Significant improvents to the player models and graphics in general, combined with the endless amount of animations they add each year 'could' possibly net the total package this year.
This year the visuals actually regressed in many aspects for PS3 owners though, well at least for me in 1080p.
ex) jaggy players in broadcast cam, blurry + jaggy menus/court logos/blurry + washed out player photos.

Close ups / replays are good though.

Oh and this year I find the blocks really weird, I dunno it might be the sound effects or the fact that the players hands don't really come close to touching the ball the majority of the time. Frequency/some new animations are great, but they just "feel" odd.

Jumpshots also don't quite feel right this year, I think its something about the speed. Most shots don't look natural, and some of them remind me of the LIVE animations that I absolutely despise. All sluggish and stuff. Want an example? Brandon Roy's shot.

on an SDTV, I think the graphics look way better in all facets, especially close-ups. I'm amazed by the close-ups.

well, the court graphics are really bad. and maybe a little jaggier. I was definitely pissed though when I got to play the game on 360 through composite cables (my PS3 is going 480i through components) and there were no jaggies there. Wish PS3 did as good of an AA job as 360
