Me? Well I believe if I tell a player to dunk, he should attempt it. If I'm on the break and flick the shot stick to do a reverse dunk, my player should attempt it. No questions asked. Unless he has a real low dunk rating. If I want to do a windmill on the break with whoever, then he should do it. Micheal Pietrus did a windmill in the playoffs. That's the first time I've ever seen him windmill. Does that mean he shouldn't be able to do it in the videogame? I mean I know he has hops, I've known he's had hops. So I should be able to dunk on command.

NOW, the problem with the game is there are no consequences for trying to dunk. You'll miss a dunk here and there, it's rare. Part of this is due to poor collision detection. If I attempt to do a dunk in traffic, I should get fouled, hit, knocked down. If I try to do a reverse dunk in traffic with some bum, I should get shoved, forced into a wild layup, injured, or even miss the dunk. There needs to be consequences.

If I'm on the fast break with Mo Williams and attempt a dunk, I should get hung or throw it off the back of the rim. People need to say to themselves "Hmm...maybe I shouldn't try to dunk with this guy." Not "He can't dunk because his rating is too low." That should go for every player. You wanna try to dunk with Steve Nash? You should embarrass yourself. You want to try to windmill with Mike Miller? This should happen.

Players' limits should not be dictated by their ratings as much as how they perform in the game. Period.
This is the perfect solution. I like the idea of attempting a 360 with Mo Williams will cause him to get hung. But we know 2K wouldn't do that. They don't want to scare off anyone.

    I like the idea though.
    Concrete evidence/videos please

I swear I had this same thought a few days ago and was going to start a thread about it but I thought about taking it even further. Where initiating your dunk to soon should also results in some bad looking missed dunks animations. Don't let the cpu throw in this auto thing where I'm pulling up for a jumpshot when I initiate a dunk. If I attempt to dunk and do it too soon then let me fall short.

so are you guys proposing a dunk button seperate from a shot button?

now i like the idea... but one question?

are you going to pull it off like LIVEs layup button to where when the user inputs the command it happens? or are you going to let the cpu decide what animation to run? b/c then i feel that we are not going forward in terms or realism we are just sidestepping it.

ie right now nba2k9 you can have a layup dunk or a jumper depending on the situation going on... many times i have wanted to do a layup and get a jumper and vice versa... same applies to dunk/layup

again i totally agree with all of the above post... i just find it hard to implement w/o separate buttons for each command...just my 2 cents

I like the shotstick fine the way it is. No turbo = layup and hold turbo=dunk is fine with me. I'm not sure about what totalownership said about attempting a dunk from too far out, though. A lot of the dunks in the game are motion captured with a gather. It would make sense if they took the gather out of all of the dunks, but it would look ridiculous unless you had to initiate the gather yourself, and that's asking too much imo.

I'm alright with the way it is now. It's just that the shotstick isn't as accurate on dunks as it once was. I coulda sworn it was supposed to be toward the basket = basic dunk, left=fancy dunk, right=power dunk, back = reverse/360 dunk. Now when you just push it toward the basket you get windmills and other dunks. It's just kinda random. That's something else that needs to be fixed.
