absolutely it can...Why because yes the nfl is more popular than the nba but even with that there are probably more ppl who play at least some basketball. whether it be in the backyard, on the streetcourt, or in an organized setting. also the problem for isn't that bball isn't popular enough (madden only sells maybe 7 to 10 mil a year; less than the number of basketball fans in america) but that it does not have a long history of hype...and look at it this way if you combine all the basketball games for 09 and compare them with madden they fare very well at second place. futher more because the nfl was and is more popular, gaming companies cared more about football games than basketball games. they didn't even have "sim" basketball games that felt like realistic basketball till 2008 (nba and ch 2k8). all these factors play a role in the equation... and just so you kno i fully expect live and nba 2k sells to b very close to madden's as early as even this year!

Madden's sells are down so it might be posible but 2k's hoops needs to really get better. 2k9 was more of a step to the side than a step forward.

no because football is AMERICA'S sport, worldwide fifa sells waaaay more copies than madden because it more popular everywhere else.
madden and 2k only sell in a few countries anyway

Fifa doesnt sell more than Madden. PES didnt even sell more in its best years and it was more popular than Fifa.

I agree 2K is getting better with respect to sales, but 2k9 was a step backwards quality-wise from 2k8.

2k6 through 2k8 were all better games than 2k9 imo.

Pretty sure worldwide Fifa sells more than Madden.

That's why globally 2k can sell more copies, for example Asia and Europe. Pretty sure Madden doesn't sell copies there.

well technically basketball is america's only truely original sport (and even that one was invented by a non american at the time) besides it not like madden is that popular( im not saying this with bias cuz im obssessed with football). basketball sold close to 5 million to compared to madden's 7 million a year total... i doubt it be that hard for a video game to sell 7 million if it was truely great...ppl play video games for fun whether its basketball or footbal or otherwisel it really doesn't matter as much as how fun and engaging it is!

Well globally Basketball is more popular than American Football.

So I think it could possibly sell more worldwide, as for here in the states. Nah, don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. Even if the NBA 2k games are always solid year to year, Madden is the only NFL game in town so it's going to sell no matter what basically.

like others have said, football is a more popular sport than basketball. While you're correct that globally basketball is more popular, 2k doesnt have that history Madden has. Madden has been around since the early 90s. So when people think of a football video game, they think of Madden. NBA Live was the leader for so many years until 2k finally overthrew them. But 2k doesnt have the name recognition a Madden has plus it has competition in Live.

But like someone else said, 2k has become the Madden of basketball games in terms of being the most popular. IMO 2k is a better game pertaining to its sport than Madden is. Its not quite on the level of what MLB the Show has become for baseball, but its better than what Madden has become for football.

Football is just far more popular in the States.

These guys get it. There are a lot of factors. Back when Madden was building its brand, console gaming was much bigger in the US and in Japan. Now that video games are global, basketball has become a global game and 2k has become a legit sports brand, this is the first time that the stage is set for such a thing to happen. Also with online communities, the first b-ball game to truly get everyone playing an adult game of basketball online will push b-ball to the top. It can get there. Not saying it will happen, but you can't look to the history of gaming and say it's impossible, because both the landscape of gaming, and the landscape of basketball have changed dramatically in the past four years.

China alone could change this whole conversation in ONE year.

Right now out of Fifa 09 and Madden 2010 Fifa 09 might outsell Madden 2010 but that would be a new trend and I would say the cause it the recent public opinion of Fifa, and the US recession. Until recently PES was the soccer game of choice. It still is in Asia. Fifa 09 sold close to 8 million. It was the best selling Fifa game ever.

NBA 2K won't be as popular as Madden until they get exclusivity like Madden did.

Madden is talked about in every media outlet because it is more or less THE official NFL game. There are events with real players that get big coverage.

Furthermore, as was said before, football is a lote more popular in the US, which means that the audience Madden has to reach is a lot smaller. If you want to make an ad for Madden, you can focus on US media only. Non-americans who are interested in football (like me, I'm from Belgium) will be exposed to those media anyway. To market NBA 2K, you have to advertise in US media, but also in European ones (and they're a lot more fragmented - for example, each year FIFA has 3 or 4 covers with different athletes according to the country), South American and Asian ones.

Even if an NBA game would sell as many copies as Madden, it wouldn't be as popular. By selling mostly to the US, Madden has an higher impact. If we assume that out of the 7 millions sold, 4 were sold in the USA (I cannot check that, but my feeling is that the number is probably higher), that means 1 American out of 60 bought the game. Can you imagine an NBA game selling to such a high percentage of its market?

Not even possible. Madden and Fifa sell 2x what NBA 2k does. NBA 2K should worry more about just being the best basketball game. Theyll never be able to beat Madden.

No chance Madden sells quite well worldwide, especially in Europe and other countries outside of the states. 2K can't even be bothered to release the Draft Combine in Australia and Europe, to be honest them kind of moves ain't gonna win any fans over here and they may even lose out to EA's NBA Live. Basketball is on the increase here in the UK and the market is getting bigger ( the exhibition games at the O2 arena in London every year get sold out within hours). Can't believe 2K have bummed us over with this.

Well I have always been a football person first, but since the NFL exclusiveness I have looked foward towards basketball games every year now. So it may be possible if more people are switching from football games. I actually play more basketball now than football.

I would have to say that a sport like basketball could be as big as madden but I don't think it will. I was talking to a few people about this earlier today and they kept on saying that they like madden more because games can turn out ether way.... I kept saying that so can basketball, they fire back with a all you do is run down the court and throw up a shot and run back, I then threw out the all you do in football is drive down the field and then play defense back.

We went on and on for about 20 minutes.. this is why Madden will be more popular than NBA 2k, people just feel that Football is a more complex sport, but for me 2k basketball will always be better than Madden
