    2K10 help please

Long story short, I'm a football guy. I have played a few NBA video games over the years, however, it was never "my thing." I recently purchased a used copy of NBA 2K10 and I fel in love with the presentation and how nice it loks. It appears to me to be a well made game overall as well.

The thing is, I hardly know anything about basketball and even less how to play this game well. I know a number of people, including myself, who are willing and able to teach people how to play football and football video games. I was wondering if the same was true here.

Are there any good links, videos, tips, etc? I prefer to play "simulation style." That is to say, as true to NBA style as possible, so I don't want any cheep tricks if I can avoid them.

    Thank you in advance.

P.S. Being from Northern California I like the Sacramento Kings. I don't care that they have only had a handful of good seasons, players like Bibby, Peja, and Divoc were fun to watch imo. I'd love to learn how to play this game well and rebuild my Kings into another fast break offense team that can compete for a crown in franchise mode

      Re: 2K10 help please

The NBA 2K forum bogs down a little around this time of year, not as many people post so I don't think it was anyone's intention to ignore you.

My piece of advice for an NBA 2K10 beginner would be to utilize the in-game tutorials to the fullest (Game Modes > Tutorials). This will at least provide you with information as to how to complete moves whilst ballhandling and operating in the post. I don't think much of anyone can play through the tutorial once and memorize all the information, so I say don't worry if you only pick up little bits and pieces at a time.

In game situations, if you're struggling to make something happen on offense, I'd suggest slowing down and allowing your point guard to set up the offense. Without you the user calling a play, your team will still set picks and run off screens if you take your time with the point guard. Finding a player coming off a screen is a nice way to make something happen.

Another strategy on offense would be to learn the "B Button" (XBox) or "Circle Button" (PS3) commands:
-Holding B will call for a pick and roll. A forward or center will set a pick for the ballhandler then roll to the basket.
-Holding L2 and B will call for a "pick and pop" where a forward or center will pick for the ballhandler then spot up for a jumpshot.
-Tapping B will have your forward or center step up, fake a pick, then dive to the basket.

Finally, on defense I'd concentrate on just keeping your man in front of you. Constantly reaching for a steal is tempting but carries a low success rate. Further, it often leads to open opportunities for the opponent. If you struggle guarding the ballhandler, then I'd suggest guarding someone off the ball. Holding the right stick toward an offensive player without the ball will "deny him" or body him up.

          Re: 2K10 help please

hey sorry nobody gave you any advice in 4 days. I'll give you some as a big basketball fan.

          1. Go to the OS slider section, and download one of them that has received much praise in it's thread. Sliders make a difference in this game.

          2. Download someone like Nogster's 2.0 roster, or maybe Rashidi's so you have good rosters. 2k's aren't very good for simulating.

          3. If I were you I'd switch the control settings to the one where B is crossover, and Y is spin. Then it makes isomotion so much easier. Here are some tutorials on dribbling and the shotstick.

          4. For strategy, here is some basic stuff. First check your ratings, to see everybody's strength and weaknesses. For example, Ray Allen is great at 3's, Kendrick Perkins is not. So obviously only shoot 3's with people above a 70+ rating. If you have a great blocker, like Dwight Howard, maybe control him even when he's not guarding the ball, in hopes that when somebody comes near the rim, you can block him. Also, find who your best defender is. Let's say your the Lakers and Ron Artest is your best defender. Well, match him up to the other team's best offensive player, as long as their is not a reasonable height disadvantage.

          5. How to play sim: Basically don't run around in circles trying to go baseline all day, don't just jack 3's or shoot really really close to the paint. Use the mid-range game. What I do is when I get by a player by one step and I don't have a clear line, I pull up and shoot over my defender, or press B and put the left stick away from the hoop(I think, it could be Y or X), and my player takes a step back to create a little more room. On defense, don't try and steal the ball constantly. I only try and steal the ball when I'm a very good stealer (once again check ratings), or a big man is under the hoop and is about to score.

          6. Run plays. Personally I don't like to run them too much, but every couple trips down the floor, I like to press one. I usually run plays for my core star players or if I see a mis-match for one of my players. If your a slow-tempo (check coach profiles to see how your team likes to play) team then run a lot of set plays. If your a balanced tempo team I run plays every once in a while, and if your a up-balanced tempo team run and shoot at the best oppurtunity, and only run plays when the other team has all the momentum, or if you need a score late in the game. To run successfully, once you get a rebound pass it to your point guard who is the outlet, then I usually look to run middle, where I get my wings running to my side, who will sometimes be open for 3, or cutting to the basket for a lay-up. But if you do not have numbers (meaning more offensive players than defense) don't force it.

          7. For franchise mode, download Vyaras' draft class so you get future NBA players in your draft class, instead of bad 2k generated rookies. Also, if you do any trades, post them in the Rate Your Trade Thread, since it is hard to do realistic trades in the NBA. A lot of it has to deal with money, instead of talent. Also I reccomend controlling all 30 teams or else the CPU will do ridiculous trades and ruin association. All you have to do is just set everything to auto except trades and then once in a while do some trades. Once again our Rate Your Trade thread has many good reccomendations for teams.

          8. If you don't know much about teams you should probably read an NBA preview, (check Sports Illustrated), or just PM me and I'll give you a breakdown on every team. This is important to know how to play a team, and how to deal with them in association mode.

If you have any more questions just ask, and I'll try my best to answer. Have fun, because this is one of the best games I've ever played.
I will always, always be a Jets fan. But trust me it hurts.

The best piece of advice I can give you aside from what others have said is... go into practice mode and potentially situational mode and practice out strategies. Everyone was at one point in time new to NBA 2k and the #1 solution was going into the gym and focusing on technique. Situational mode will allow for you to figure out and focus on different stratgies within the game without playing a full game for a competitive purpose (meaning scoring for a win).

Practice made.. in the words of Allen Iverson... "we talkin' 'bout PRACTICE."

                    Re: 2K10 help please

Yeah, I don't mind going into practice. Not a game. Not a game. Practice. I'm talking about Practice.

Before the replies I really didn't know much of anything about Basket Ball. I knew that the Center was often under the post like Shaq and Yao. I knew the point Guard ran the offense most often. However, istill kind of don't know what the Shooting guard, small and power forwards jobs are and what role they play on both sides of the court and where/how to take best advantage of each position. I know football has very defined roles, I assume B-Ball does as well, I just don't know them.

I knew what a slam dunk, and alley oop and a layup were. i know what a fade away and a mid range jumper are. However, I don't know what a "good look" is other than being wide open which is a break down in defense/good offensive set up. When i shoot in the game I get a lot of commentary like "you really need to take a better shot" or "He needs to wait for a better look." I find in practice I often get "perfect release" or "slightly late" however, I can't find a practice mode where it will tell me that while I'm posted up. Should I still wait to release the right stick at the high point of a shot when posted up? When posted up it plays out a long animation before he even shoots compared to a simple jumper.

Thanks again and I am going to continue to work on this game... this game, like other 2k games, is amazing. 2K is where amazing happens.

                      Here are the player roles:

PG- To be the floor general. Start the plays, find open shooters, and usually the best passer on the team. The point guard will try and get into the paint, to penetrate the defense, draw them in, and then kick it out to an open teammate. This player usually doesn't look to score too much but some do.

SG- Usually a very good shooter. He will come of screens looking for open shots. Also, sometimes a good driver, where he can get into the lane. Smaller than the small forward (almost all the time), but doesn't have the ball handling or passing skills of a point guard

SF- Another player who can most of the time shoot. He is taller than the shooting guard, and will sometimes have to guard big men, and must rebound too. Usually these players are good at driving too.

PF- Just a smaller center. This player must be a good rebounder, and have a good post game. Most power forwards aren't good shooters, but some are, atleast within 20 feet.

C-The biggest player on the court for the team, most of the time. Must rebound, guard the post, and play with his back to the basket. These players usually can't shoot at all outside of 15 feet, but some can. (Mehmet Okur on the Jazz).

Also, if the announcer says your taking a bad shot, you probably are. Bad shots usually are shots near the 3 point line, in which the defender is really close to you. You normally don't want to shoot that shot unless the shot clock is winding down, or it's your best player and he can shoot. A good shot, is either real close to the basket, or an open shot with a good shooter. To tell if your guy is within range of his shot, look at the yellow cell phone bars underneath him. If he has no bars he won't hit it, with one it's unlikely, with two it's not his best shot, with three he can hit it consistently, with four he has a very good chance, and with if filled up it's almost automatic.

Hope you understand that, and good luck. Just keep asking questions if you need it, especially about teams. A lot of us here are experts on many players, their strengths and weaknesses.

Okay, so I guess I just can't shoot the ball to save my life. The only practice mode that tells me about my release is free mode where you shoot uncontested. When I go into post practice or scrimmage, I can't tell what I'm doing wrong. I end up shooting like 3 for 20 on average. I shoot most of my shots in the paint or just outside the paint. I am using the Kings on Pro difficulty. I just don't get it. When I go into free mode practice I get "perfect release" or slightly late, but again, these are uncontested shots. I try to use the players who have good "inside scoring" in the depth chart. I don't expect to make every shot or anything, and I know the Kings are terribad, but common...

I am going to try the Celtics because I like them [I hate LA and the celtics are a big rival of LA... so...] Maybe it is a combination of me not being any good at this game and the Kings not being any good either.

Shoot, I'm sorry man. I forgot exactly what it was called, I think I was referring to the "free" practice mode, where one player can shoot at will, as it seems you have found. I think that mode is the one that has a banner across the bottom of the screen walking the user through various moves as you press left or right on your d-pad, yes? That's what I was speaking of.

Don't forget to take what the defense gives you. Don't bother with mid-range jumpers if the defense isn't allowing you to take them. If the only option is to work inside, then do it and shift your focus to the mid-range and long range when the defense adapts and the opportunity presents itself.

It's only cheesing when you try forcing things to happen and using exploits, but there's nothing wrong with taking what you're given and going with the flow.

I've found that at least against the CPU, it's better to start from the inside and then gradually spread out the game.
