The Player Progression file doesn't have anything to do with association mode. It's basically to keep track of the changes made to ratings of all players in the official rosters that 2k puts out about once a week. Also, you won't lose your created teams if you save your roster that has them with a different file name like "My Rosters". Autosave only overwrites the default files like "Rosters", "Settings", and "Game Sliders".
