Check out rosters, player ratings, etc. Skim through the game modes to see whats all available. Then probably practice a lot until I'm ready for a quick game.

Offline game to test the AI on default sliders, see the new gameplay improvements and animations then I will start building a dynasty in Association. I might check to see if online has improved.

Quick game Celtics vs Mavericks, no practice.

Coincidentally my 2 favorite teams and the 2 I've had on my quick game page since I got 2k11 when it came out.

Personally, I'll watch IGN's video review whenever that comes out. If it doesn't get at least a 9.0, I'm not sure I'll buy it (what with FIFA 11 and Battlefield 3 competing for my meager gaming dollars). If I do get it, I'll check out online and pray it got the massive overhaul it needs, most importantly 0 lag so it's actually playable.

Then I'll probably move on to My Player, screw around with some of those old teams, and make like 15 Association files over the following 10 months like I've done in 2k11.

Check the roster, take the Bucks into practice mode... then probably My Player.

Normally I go straight to My Player mode but I think I will be checking out the classic team rosters first then My Player, then Association.

...I'd go to practice mode first then go 1 on 1 with the highest rated 2K12 player available (probably Michael Jordan still) and beat him, testing if the cpu AI will really be working as they planned. Then I go play some exhibition games with the Legends against the current NBA sissy stars. If everything goes satisfactorily well I'll start My Player mode immediately.

Those reviews are bought and sold and 2K always gets rated well, so it's not really something consumers should put stock in. Your best bet, if you're unsure, is to rent it first or play it at a buddy's house.

Promised myself I'd wait out the hype machine this time. Hate going back to Gamestop a month later.

I usually do the following:

Look through the rosters to see whats what (Ratings, Rotations, FA list, Legends teams)
Play an exhibition game usually involving teams that made the playoffs the season before.

On topic: When it comes out I'll just come here and see what the issues are. Check back a few days later and see what will be patched. Wait until Black Firday and pick it up unless I'm still going strong with 2k11 (probably so). I'll get it eventually because of classic teams but 11 will be hard to retire.
