NBA2K11 is the pinnacle of greatness.

I rated games on how long I play them.

I am still playing 2K11 with just 3 weeks left before 2K12 drops

Just because you got a A in Spanish 101, does that mean you will get a A in Advanced Spanish??? The rating is based on the advancement from 1 year to another. Hope that helps..

You're going to say a game deserves a 10 when it won't last past a year? Starcraft and Counterstrike are two games which people are still playing today, despite being released 10~ years ago. Those games deserve 10s.

I think you're articulating your view well, but you do seem to be making a bit of an apples/oranges comparison. There are very few (if any) sports games that remain viable to play 10yrs out (especially console sports games). I'm guessing Starcraft and Counterstrike have benefited from being on the PC platform and mods. I know MVP is a game that can be considered a classic title that's been updated on PCs.

I remember when Mario 64 released, it was one of the first games I remember universally being rated a "10". It's not that it was perfect, you're also looking at what it's impact was at the time. Same for games like GTA III, Halo, etc. None perfect but all impactful/influential for their time. It's part of the reason NFL2K5 is held in high regard imo; as flawed as it is football gaming never evolved much beyond what that game was introducing. Either way obviously I don't agree that NBA2K11 was overrated.

In light of all the news coming out of 2k regarding 2k12, particularly in gameplay and game modes, is it fair to say NBA 2k11 was overrated? I mean, the game was pulling 9s and 10s everywhere, but surely if 2k12 is an improvement in so many different ways, that rating can't hold.

This makes no sense. How could a game be rated basted on competition from the future? Moreso, a future iteration of itself?

Should ever game published get a low rating because it doesn't use a 3D holographic display that allows you to actually see the players run around in your living room, because in the future, we'll have that?

No, NBA 2K11 certainly deserved every rating they got.

2K still gets a 1/10 for being slow (and bad) at patching the game after release though.

To illustrate, consider a 2D Fighter like Street Fighter. Comparing it to NBA 2k11 is largely frivolous given how different the games are, but here's one thing, that as a game, Street Fighter has over NBA 2k11 and by a wide margin: Street Fighter is playable at a highly competitive level. NBA 2k11 doesn't even come close in the competitive sphere, and this is due to a large number of core gameplay problems from AI issues and gameplay exploits, which really hampered the gameplay experience for me and detracts from my enjoyment of the game.

I'm curious...What is Street Fighter doing competitivly that NBA 2k11 isnt doing? I know 2k has had some server issues, but I've been able to play more online games this year than any before. Exploits happen in most online games, but it's more on the players end. 2k tried to mitigate those issues with patches.

That should tell you everything about if 2K11 was overrated.

Still playing it. And will keep playing it for probably another year easy.

I think 2k11 was overrated. The game is just way too animation heavy for the praise that it gets here. I still think 2k8 before the update was the best basketball sim every created. Sad part, it was too real for a lot of the bball community.

You ask a question ("Was NBA 2k11 overrated?"), then it seems as if you don't like the answers--what the heck? A lot of people are saying, "No", then giving you reasons, but you're not taking the reasons--you're going against them...so why ask the question? You would have been better off naming your thread NBA 2K11 was overrated and then explaining why.

It wasn't overrated by any means. Michael Jordan, for instance, was good in '91 but got better in '92--do you think he was overrated in '91? If yes, you need to stop smoking that stuff. If no, you will apply that reasoning to NBA 2K11.

College Hoops 2K8 was a good game that deserved all the praise it got, even though the graphics were an eye sore. If there was a CHoops 2K9, you can't go back and say 2K8 was overrated. See Jordan '91 example.

I think nba 2k11 was overrated not because 2k12 will likely be better. But because of the praise it has received over the last year. I just do not think it deserves "best sports game of all time praise." I don't even think it is the best basketball sim of all time. NBA 2k8 pre update was a better simulation. It was much less reliant on heavy handed animations.

But hey, maybe this is because most of my games are against human opponents or online. I dont play the cpu as much as people on here do.

A review is just an opinion, like when you first play the game you form an opinion.A large majority of people believe (including me) that 2k11 was the best basketball game thus far. Does the can-animation annoy me? Yes, 2k12 will most likely have them too. But does the bad out way the good? Definitely. Yes the game is animated heavy but 2k has been like that for years, not being able to break out of animations, so i guess it doesn't bother those that enjoyed the game that bad. So all in all the only thing that matters is how you feel about the game. Animations aren't going anywhere until a sports game can prove that a physic's based sports game can be enjoyable.

I don't understand what you are talking about. It didn't enjoy 2k11 as much as 2k8. I didn't play it as much either. It just felt a little clunky and unresponsive.

I was talking about the topic, not you directly. I'm not arguing on the internet, but maybe you should give 2k11 a chance. That's all I have to say about that. People have always disagree with one another, people will continue to disagree. So I'm not going to try to prove to you how 2k11 was better than 2k8 because 2k8 is better in your opinion.

2k11 overrated....? No freaking way.... It was the deserving of ALL it's high ratings....who doesn't/didn't love 2k11...? Besides the folks at E cough cough A....? The game was/is awesome....UNTIL 2k12 drops, I'm actually still playing 2k11 now....I love 2k basketball...BUT until this year I NEVER played after the NBA season ended...2k11 changed that and 2k12 will do the same...
