Very true. IMO, if what he was told by his former 2K co-worker is true, I think this is more directly connected to 2K sending a message to the consumer to buy their games from the trusted/major retailers in order to guarantee your getting everything. No one that has bought a game from one of the major chain stores has said they didn't get a code, yet the folks that bought early from a M&P or from ebay didn't get one or it was hit and miss for those that did. Simple mathematics if you ask me.
2K knows that trusted majors like Target, Gamestop, Walmart, Best Buy...etc. aren't gonna presell the game like the M&P's regularly do. For following the "no sale till the release day" rule, this will then funnel business to those trusted retailers instead of the early selling M&P's, ebay's and craigslist sellers because those trusted stores will be the ones who are guaranteed to have the games with the codes and bonuses.
And let's be honest with ourselves, "Bob & Donna's Video Game Hut" or "Tim and Tina's Game Shop" isn't where 2K's real bread is coming from anyway. It's the majors. You do whatever you have to do to keep them happy since those majors are the ones who's buying your games by the pallet loads for all their stores around the US and even internationally. Target buying 400,000 games for all their locations around North America compared to a M&P buying 20 here and 20 there is small potatoes to 2K.
