For 2k11 it did, dont know for 2k12 ... there wasnt a way to know if your opponent use it, unless (see further) ... then again, is not all good, there is a great lose of control when having it on ... basically it keeps your player closer to the ball handler but you are more prone to stuck on the animation where an oponent player passes by and your player turns to him, therefor leaving the one with ball open for a second ... also, if you move the player on a direction opposed to what the cpu tries to get you, you may be stuck in the animation where your player falls down (broken angle) or may be stuck on a band effect animation where your player abruptly moves with a boost to an undisire place.

Is a good (not perfect) alternative for those who find it too hard to play on ball D and dont want to invest whatever time is needed to get to a confort zone doing so (which is what I recommend 1st: practice a lot).

      Re: Defense

I was having the same frustrations when I first started playing 2K12 this year. I have found that you really must pay attention to the way you use the triggers. Never use the triggers while standing still and try not to use RT without having the LT engaged. Here is the theory behind it all:

the Left Stick alone is your regular movement. You will use this the most.

they brought in the LT to shorten and limit your movement so you can have tighter control and not overshoot the ball handler as much as in the past.

You incorporate the RT when you are holding the LT and need a brief quick movement to recover. So really, you will be basically toggling the RT to make sure you aren't beat by quick movements of the person you are guarding.

You will need to learn how you play on ball defense and use the triggers to compliment that style. You can also back off of quick players or press up on shooters like real ball. It takes some getting use to but I can see where they were going with it. People were asking for more control and tighter movement on defense and they are making an attempt to give it to us.

The verdict is still out on it for me. I'm understanding it better and practicing but I'm not big on it because you can't play angles or shade players to thier week hand or toward help defenders. My biggest issue is that it feels rather unresponsive at times, especially when contesting shots. It's almost like the defender starts to move in slow motion when you press the Y button to contest. Closing out is really slow too.
These are my opinions based off of my perspective. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, but if you disagree, we can still agree to disagree agreeably and not fight about it.

Thanks to all the answers from ppl I have kinda picked up on what the controls are now just need time with the game.

Instead of using Y to contest shots use the right stick to put ur hands up works better for me.
And I kinda like the way that u can't be playing help D inside and then sprint outside to cover a shooter makes it more realistic nd makes u regret running in to defend the paint against guys who hit open shots.

Oh ok thanks yea I've never used it before actually never really paid attention to it until it was brought up in this thread. I don't plan on using it now but was wondering what it is that keeps people from turning it up all the way nd playing online that way. I guess its a bit of a double edged sword?

The CPU will auto contest if you have the LT or RS engaged but that is based on the player's contest tendency. I have not gotten proficient with the RS hand up feature yet... my players always seem to end up out of position when I use it.

Good riddance to suction defense. No more bumping guys when the defender doesn't have an angle. It's harder to defend but feels better and more rewarding. Helps pick and rolls flow better too, but you can go around or even through the two defenders. You gotta play the P&R smart on D.

                Re: Defense

I just played a full game on 10min quarters. The score was close the first half but I adjusted and won by 15+. CP3 was clutch and dropped 59. I'm not longer being aggressive and chasing the guy, instead i'm switching and using other players to defend. I was getting killed inside the paint and that seemed to work. I'm switching to shorter defenders inside the paint and let the CPU go after blocks and rebounds. Everytime I try to do it, they pump fake or pass out of the shot.

FYI, putting your hands up don't seem to work when contesting shots. Whenever I do it, it comes out slowly and the guy is already by me, or he hits the shot in my face. It works for tipping passes and playing the lanes though.

I havent played online yet but it is harder to stay in front of the CPU this year. I usually keep the defense assist slider at 50. Im getting better though through practice. I was good on defense in all the past 2k's so im hopeing that trend continues

While just holding LT you can move step by step.

Also with anyone having problems on D, just turn defense assist strength to 100 and when you hold LT it should keep up with your man with onl minor adjustments.

Or play a 1-3-1 and control the wing player opposite ball side to get alot of deflections..if the wing player is athletic (Paul George) you can get alot of easy blocks and rebounds.

Lastly if you just flat out suck on D try starting with man to man and switching to a 1-3-1 mid possession to shut down lead passers and slashers for power dunks..it stop the drive pretty well..BUT BEWARE FOR THE CORNER 3

I shut down a D Rose abuser LeBron and wade using this..

If you run into a ISO motion abuser just use your on the fly D and select pressure all shoothers..play on the off wing and wait to help or play on the PF

This game can be difficult to stop certain players but its very easy as well...just use ur brain
This is the type of detailed response that's really helpful. I will definitely try/practice this style. It seems easier said than done though.

Question though...What's the best mode to go to practice ono-on-one defense? Is there a 1-on-1 mode?

                      Re: Defense

You have to learn how to apply real basketball logic when playing D. The biggest a lot of us made last year was not understanding that on ball was built into the defensive rating of the player as it is also in 2k12. Give your self space between you the defender and the ball handler. If he is a quick player and you have a slow defender, shade him to force into your help.

You have to hold LT AND RT this year. Holding both lets you get that cutoff move and do faster backpedals and strafing.

i think i got defense down now it was just a matter of getting used to it and learning the controls it is nice to have to play smart this year instead of just running into a guy and stopping him with no foul.

another question though last year LT made them contest a shot as a big man. this year is it just not very effective or is there another button i should be pressing?

                            thanks

use right stick for hands up and use LS to get directly in their face. then let the LS go while still holding right stick for hands up. takes practice but once you get it down, you will realize how much better 2k12 is than 2k11. good luck.
