We're talking two different points during shooting though...I'm talking about they not putting their hands in a "contesting" manner until after the ball has left the hand of the shooter (in which case isn't much more of a contest than a guy just standing in front of you).

Bottom line this is the first bball game where many times the animation sequence that plays out visually does not look like the shot was defended well, but the outcome, grade, and commentators suggest otherwise. Maybe the contest animation needs to be speed up or something, but there is a disconnect between what you see is happening and what actually is happening. I've instant replayed my fair share of "contested" shots to be certain that this is an issue.

This is HUGE defensively imo. Once I learned to anticipate drives and cut off the drive angle and let go of the stick once I initiate contact my defense improved immensely. Now I'm really good at switching players several times during defensive possessions to reposition my cpu teammates if necessary, play off-ball, etc. Played the NBA Today OKC at LAC last night and held the Thunder to 32% shooting in the first quarter. Still lost the game, but was really happy with how I played defense. Then jumped online and held some guy that seemed like a pretty good player to 18pts in the first half. The system isn't perfect, but isn't anywhere near as horrible as some make it out to be imo.

Another tip I'd add on defense when I detect a mismatch is moving the correct defender or a better defender over and hitting tapping LT/RT to force the cpu player back to guarding the correct person. One thing that doesn't get talked about a much is how your cpu teammates will switch on defense when you're defending off-ball
HBO's "The Wire" should rank as one of the top 10 shows EVER on tv - period

I understand what you're saying. It's not perfect but not to the level you make it out to be IMHO. It does play out a bit too slowly.

The one you're referring to I believe is when you are too far away from the shooter.

Here's an example of good defense:

I agree with this -- the game can be very different depending on the camera angle. I'm still torn between "Broadcast" and the ol' reliable 2K angle -- although getting the Zoom and height figured out can be a bit of a bear.

I love the broadcast view just because of how it makes the game really look like a broadcast...

Played some MP last night. Won the game, but still wasn't satisfied by the overall experience, the flow seems off to me and I scored 30 in a C-level performance in a come from behind win with my 72-rated player on the Sixers versus Detroit...

Trying to defend the paint from the over-aggressive CPU gets annoying. It's like the CPU only ever runs plays designed for scoring from the paint, and only shoots jumpshots when that doesn't work. It's just paint, paint, paint, paint. 2K12 plays and animates so much more smoothly than 2K11, but I have yet to get used to this AI.

I will definitely try out the LS/LT defense. I have problems giving up easy shots when the ball handler does a hesititation and frees his self up. I hope it helps me prevent players from driving too much. When I face guards like Wade and Ellis they have a field day against me.

If I'm not mistaken it was either 2K8 or 2K9 that had the best Iso camera angle which offered the best height and zoom which help out tremendously limiting blind spots. Sadly the new Iso isn't playable.
Where they DO that? ? ?

Half of this stuff doesn't really help me on my player

This thread is excellent. It just upped my game by about 60% and reduced my "opposing team PIP" down about 20 ppg

I always thought that holding down LT causes your player to tire quicker...

It does, doesn't it? I thought it was "lock down D" which increases your on-ball D but decreases your stamina. I could be wrong though.

The one you're referring to I believe is when you are too far away from the shooter.

Here's an example of good defense:

Both are right stick contests with perfect timing.
Those examples look legit. I'll see if I can find a video of what i'm talking about.

Pared I agree with the hands up I started using it a lot when I was playing the 72 Lakers with Cincy because I was getting killed by West and Goodrich with their mid range jumpers once I got in the habit of keeping my hands up on def. they started missing it also helps to keep your hands up most of the time because it makes the cpu work the ball around more and eat up the shot clock its not perfect but does help bring down the shooting pct.
It's stupid to spend $65 to cheat...play with honor but have fun..

I tried the suggestion of pressing into a ball handler when he's trying to drive to the paint and I have found that it's not all that effective for me. Things happen just as I suspected, as the computer continuously adjusted itself until I made a human mistake and then it simply went by me and capitalized as I moved out of position. Looking at the stats of the first quarter of the game that I'm playing right now the computer has shot five more shots that I have but we are both shooting 47% from the field. My team is shooting 60% from behind the arc while they're shooting 12%. Everything looks great for my team and with that kind of stat line you would expect me to be winning but it is just not the case.

The part where it turns ugly is when you look down at the bottom of the stats and it says points in the paint CPU: 18 and me: 2. For me, getting points in the paint is incredibly difficult. For the computer, getting points in the paint is the only way they know how to score it seems. The score was 25 to 21 and the computer had 18 points in the paint, one 3 point shot, two free throws, which leaves only one mid/long-range shot. In my opinion, that's just flat out ridiculous! There has to be a way to stop this from happening.
These are my opinions based off of my perspective. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, but if you disagree, we can still agree to disagree agreeably and not fight about it.
