Re: Why is this game so inconsistent? (serious question)

I know sort of what the OP Is saying some games it plays so true to life another game the CPU is sliding past you effortlessly like you are not their and playing superb defense too perfect. All I can say it is a thin line between a challenging CPU and and a unrealistic CPU. The difficulty doesn't always translate realistic imo. I played the NBA today games yesterday the Lakers and the Heat game some of the best games I had against the CPU won both realistic. I played a third game me Boston vs. The pistons it was like the CPU was on steroids almost felt like I was playing on HOF. The CPU knew what I was going to do in the post before I did anything. Block shots, instant steals crazy rebound margin warp sliding, crazy success for contact layups repeatedly. It was like the game was decided already and I was along for the ride.k

I think part of it is down to the momentum crap. Once one or 2 things go wrong it just snowballs.

It's operator error. Sometimes you just have bad days. Sometimes you gotta get warmed up. 2k is the teller of truth

I should say my frustration stems from playing My Player and online, where you can't adjust sliders. It is much worse in My Player. My player is pure fiction, and I have to get the notion out of my head that it will play like a basketball game. The momentum is out of control. But online it's not so bad. I usually agree that the game is the teller of truth!

To the OP, I feel you 100%. I have a ridiculous love-hate relationship with this game. Just two weeks ago I got so furious by falling victim to another late CPU run that I ejected the disc, slammed it into its case, and then violently spiked it to the ground until it shattered into pieces.

Yeah...it was bad. Ridiculous? Absolutely. lol but I was

I decided to come back to the game just yesterday after discovering this thread. Sword, you REALLY helped me out - your suggestion to lower game speed has made a HUGE HUGE HUGE difference.

I feel like I can actually play defense again and don't have to jack up on ball D to 80. I can slow down dribble penetration and force contact on those irritating point guards who throw about 8 or 9 up and unders at you. MAN it feels good to block those. Somebody should put together a freaking montage of blocked up-and-unders...it would be the sweetest retribution.

Anyways, after playing well over 250 game against the CPU, a pattern is starting to emerge. For 90% of my games, my sliders feel great, the game flows nicely, and everything seems to just flat out make sense. I fall in love with the game, and enjoy playing it immensely.

THEN the game decides to switch over to the dark side.

Every now and then, I feel like the game simply decides from the tip-off you are not going to win the game. Now I understand that a lot of this is self-fulfilling prophesy - I'm getting the results I expect because that's what I expect will happen. But I don't know...these "SPECIAL" 10% games just feel completely OFF.

Blocked shots suddenly become fouls. I no longer grab offensive rebounds. The CPU (almost 75% of the time it's a SG if not their star player) has one player go BANANAS and make 90% of his shots. I see them outscore me by 15-20 points in a quarter. I feel like the ice skating effect on defense is intensified and I can no longer guard anyone. I notice I'm fouling every possession they're not scoring. And in the second half, my guys just feel...slower, weaker, and less agile.

What's so frustrating about these "10% games" is how difficult it is to describe what's exactly happening or to try and pinpoint the cause. I don't mind losing as long as I feel like it's MY FAULT and I'm in CONTROL. 90% of the time, I feel like if I lose a game, it's because I made poor decisions and didn't play well. But for those other games...I feel completely helpless. And that's what is so aggravating.

I think a lot of us are going through something similar to this. Whoever suggested the game is running through scripts and readjusting itself, that makes sense. I have absolutely no idea what makes this happen, but I just wish there was a way to pinpoint it or at least fashion a solution. The last thing I want to do is just think, "Hmmm this is one of those damn games. I'm going to have to bump my sliders up and then put them back down when the game's over."

Anyways, sword, your tip made a big difference and really helped my game out. Here's to me, and each of you, not seriously damaging something in your house

I never thought to slow the game speed down, but that makes sense defensively.

Honestly, the last week or so has been fine. I haven't encountered those issues lately. Hopefully it doesn't start back up again. I've gotten it similar to 2K11, which was very enjoyable to me. I set it to All Star, then set the CUP sliders for shooting down by 5 for every category, then I bumped my 3pt shooting up to 55 and passing to 60 (to eliminate those fake bobble passes and allow you to actually pass out of a jumpshot). I also increased hustle to 100, although I'm not really sure if it effects anything. I turned off clutch as well.

The main difference in All Star is the cpu plays better defense (its really hard to get a clean layup or dunk, which is pretty realistic). Yet, the shooting is fine except for 3pters (which is why I bumped it up a little). And on defense, if you stay in front of your man they don't usually go nuts on offense (although I know what you mean, some games they are just on fire the whole game).

Anyway, the patch 2K came up with a few months ago was actually a great patch for the game, though I still feel like it is not always integrated (which is what I'm referring to with "inconsistent"). But lately its been fine.
