the release timing on those are different than regular jumpshots - you have to release earlier.

    at least in my experience

I do too. Even with great ratings that should result in makes, I miss 'em.

The release might be early like thuglife said, but in my opinion, the d on these shots is usually lockdown. It's hard to create separation with these shots. Even after using some size ups and such, then chaining it into a escape dribble pull up, the D is usually still right in my shorts. Most of the time. It could just be me though.

On a side note, I've found that just flicking the stick left or right, without holding any triggers, creates some good space too. I've started to do this when operating the pick and roll because it creates much better spacing than trying to use the dribble moves and the like for some reason.

Wouldn't flicking the left stick right or left just make your person turn that direction then go back facing foward since it's like you wanted him to go left or right but changed your mind?

I mostly only flick the stick left or right when the ball is in the opposite hand, as that when it seems most effective. So as I call for the pick and roll, I wait and see where my man sets up, put the ball in the opposite side he's coming on with a subtle movement of the left stick, then as he sets the pick, I give the stick a quick flick and my player makes a quick little jump dribble to the side I flicked to.

My guy doesn't go backwards unless I flick towards the ball hand. Then the movement is a little weird and my guy turns sideways a bit. But I've been experimenting and you can beat some guys just by flicking the left stick. I've found it to be pretty effective.
