Re: NBA 2K13 Demo Available Now For 360 and PS3, Post Impressions Here

Loving the demo so far. Even though I don't like the jay-z ex producer thing but oh we'll, I actually kinda like a few aspects of it though.

Gameplay seems fluid and good but as I have learned with games is that the initial judgement of the game shouldn't be taken seriously.

First thing I noticed was the crowd. It's a lot of replicas, even behind the broadcast desk, (check the dude with the comb over.)

I like the controls in games in every once and a while I forget to pull the trigger.*

Sig skills seem to work, *had a chase down with lebron and westbrook and west brook bricked but got a foul. Seemed accurate to me.

Also rebounds are kinda weird. I think you gotta get in position then box out. The thunder just had a position were the got like 5 or 6 boards couple were legit other were idk. It's lag in a lot of these animations also ( blocking, shooting, dribbling)

It's still a lot of players running from assignments not much but enuff.

They all seem to act like the real life replicas. The teams play like themselves. Running plays, stuff looked great. Just a few tweeks and this will be great.

Wish they kept all the sig stuff. That would set this game on a highier level for me. Can't wait for Tuesday.

I feel like I heard somebody say "shotclock cheese" somewhere in the crowd.

The rebounding is a little janky for my liking.

I like the animations, but some of them are debilitating like last year (specifically the 'oh man I was hip-checked so hard I must now double over in disbelief' and the 'as I do all of this dipsey-do crossovering, I'm just going to go ahead and profile out of bounds because I gotta get my steps in rhythm'). I am glad, however, that the paint seems to be fair game--at least from what I could tell without having player lock on.

demo was great actually. I'm not feeling the jay z aspect at all. It loks like he even helped influenced the graphic dept with that greco-roman type background art with all the swords and junk. Not my tea, but as far as the gameplay, I'm excited to play. Last 2k I had was 11, before 2k8 so it'll be nice to start playing sims again.

Stuck with it for about an hour and a half last night. My first impressions remain the same - not liking it at all.

The game itself looks great, slight graphical updates and player movement is all above board. Some of the new animations are fantastic.

Then we get to the control mechanics. The dribble stick. I'm sorry, but after my first 4 games I had managed to get the hang of it, and also developed a huge dislike for it. It's awful. After using the right stick for the last couple of years as primarily a shooting stick, the change to a dribble action is baffling. It's cumbersome and akward. Completely ruined the experience for me. That coupled with enough gold in the game to even make Mr T. jealous, things are not looking good right now, purchase wise. The news that there are significant star players missing from legends was bad enough, now after actually playing the demo, i'm kind of leaning towards staying with 2k12 - unless it's a definite that we can change the control scheme back to 2k12?

Thats said, even being able to revert to the 2k12 controls might not be enough, I haven't actually felt this dissapointed with 2k in years.

I think my problem is they spoiled us with the Jordan challange and the legends, now they've nohting similar this year I just don't see the point in getting the game really.

Here's hoping another play through the demo tomorrow will change my mind. I really do want to like this.

                Pros
                • Crisp passing
                • Improved blocking mechanics; that chase down block is a thing of beauty
                • Improved on-ball defense- I can finally guard 1 on 1 for the most part without being blown away too much as was the case in 2k12

                Cons
                • Minor changes to presentation & layout- still looks like 2k12
                • Rebounding is a concern- CPU snatching rebounds from behind despite being boxed out, frequent tip rebounds (I really hope Mike Wang is right and the reason for these issues is due to Pro/Default sliders ..)
                • Minimal help defense from A.I team-mates (no improvement; same as 2k12)
                • Dribbling controls being on the RS and having to hold the left trigger to shoot which to me causes a split second of delay. As a result of this, I've now started using the shot button instead of the shot stick when shooting spot-up jumpers
                • LeBron's headband is way too low- should be covering his hairline not forehead!!!
                • There were some occasions where Perkin's screen knocked LeBron to the ground. Now if this was Battier or Chalmers I would understand but come on, this is LeBron ... dude probably weighs as much as Perkins does and is definitely as strong as, if not stronger ..

As for online play- forget about it! My first game I had a 1 second delay throughout the game (never played online since ..)- could the issue be because I live in Australia hence causing high latency?

Overall I would say a definite improvement over 2k12!! Now hopefully I can master the controls before the game gets release. That way I can get straight into a couple of exhibition games to get my groove & feel before starting My Career & Association Mode.

                  Some things I noticed already

-Spin move and up and under moves are way overpowered...
-Self alleyoops need to be drastically toned down (I personally would even remove them from the entire game)
-Lack of contact when an offensive player is close/under the rim (maybe a slider thing?), combined with poor shot blocking/too slow contest animations for the defenders. Lead passes could be the cheesers' favorite weapon this year

Everything else feels GREAT, having a lot of fun with the demo

2k will never learn rebounding has been an issue way back 2k5. specially the OFFENSIVE rebound.i hope they change how the difficulty works. the more higher the difficulty, the more penalty you get.that just doesnt make any sense. im pretty sure this game is unplayable in Hall of Fame. this is in offline/association mode.

                      More observations about the demo:

I'm really liking the upgrades to several areas of gameplay. Rebounding definitely feels upgraded. Yes, it still feels a little scripted in that sometimes the wrong guy gets the ball or it warps out of one player's hands into another's but it feels a bit more live and as if players are aware the ball is actually there. Tips look and feel great. They do jump a bit too high.

Same goes with interceptions, tips, and blocks. The tips seem more natural and don't always result in a turnover or the ball going to the other team. Not that they always did in 2k12 but the ball didn't feel as "free". The blocking engine is also much nicer. Players also animate better on block attempts as if they're aware of the ball's location, and it almost feels that they're actually changing shots even when they don't get the block. Defense just feels a bit more real and less scripted. Also seeing some goaltends at the height of the shot rather than just the silly ones right before the ball falls in the basket. They definitely add to the drama and I don't remember many of these in 2k12.

Overall, player interaction with the ball seems improved on multiple fronts. Stealing also looks really nice though these might be a bit too scripted for my liking on default.

Getting better with the control stick, though I feel it might be the least polished part of the game.

I think there should always be animations in the paint. Everywhere else, the sticky animations should be gone, but it's just so hard to do contact when driving that you should start an animation depending on the position of other players more often. That will fix some weird dunks.

                          This demo on Kinect= ill.

Besides the commands you can perform, the ability to use 2k cam is where it's at. The controls now make SO much more sense....No broadcast for me this year...

I bet it is. Just saw smoove's video. Demo would have been so much better if non-Kinect players could execute some of those quickplays and defensive changes in game. Cool little easter egg in demo for Kinect
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

As I've already preordered the game after learning about all the gameplay changes, I'll skip the demo and look forward to finally getting the final game. Can't wait ...

OT: Does anybody else miss the option to shoot freethrows using sixaxis on PS3? 2ksports, will this be in back in 2k13? If not, is it possible to patch this into the game?
