Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not
I like the auto contest feature
I had to take the CPU defense assist to zero because it hurt me more then it helped. My player felt stiff and slower with it onComment

Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not
Depends. I played a game today where my opponent had the heat. I normally like to play on ball d but he kept passing to ray allen and hitting 3s. It's like my guy could t close out on his fast enough and he would drain it every time. I had to play as ray Allen's defender.Comment

Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not
auto shot contest is way overpowered in user vs user game. Takes all skill out of playing on ball defense. If i beat someone off a screen for a jumper, the CPU shouldnt make human controlled defender run at me full speed with hands up causing my player to miss the jumper 90% of the time. The last time we had this crutch was in 2k8 and we've been foine without it with 2k9-12. ON ball d and anticipation is a skill that should be learned just like a shot release. No need for cpu assistance in defending a jumper, if you know its coming just JUMP to defend or use the right stick and put both hands up. I hope this feature is removed from 2k14 because people are just lazy on defense now to where their only concern is to stand as close at possible to you and pray the CPU defends the shot for them.
We already cant defend the paint with user controlled defense, don't gimp the perimeter defense for the casuals any more.#SIMNATION

Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not
I think that everyone should strive to be a mostly on ball defender so others can't complain about your game if they lose. If you beat someone, playing off ball defense just gives someone an excuse to use as the reason they lost.
That being said I think it's more effective to play on ball defense.
I think the argument can also be made that if you aren't any good if you play off ball on defense that on the flip side you aren't any good if you can't beat the cpu defender either.
Regardless, there are five guys on the court. I think you should be able to use anyone you chose on defense. For MyNBA, MyLeague & MyGM content, follow Coach2K on X by clicking here.

Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not
I play on-ball 100% of the time. I take pride in my defense, if you want to score 2 points, you're going to have to do it against me and not the computer. I laugh at the "if you have a great scorer, I play off ball to double him" excuses. You have coach settings for that, that basically means you don't know how to guard the opponent one on one effectively. If you get your *** bust, you get your *** bust, call a TO and change your defensive settings, it's not a pick up and play game, coach and defensive settings are there for a reason.
The auto contest feature is probably overpowered as some have pointed out, but it beats being 5 feet away jumping straight up waving your arm. In real life, if you were 5 feet away from a shooter, you're not going to jump straight up or not contest at all (unless you suck at defense and/or just lazy) you're going to run at him and at least try and throw him off.
I hate playing majority of users because of off-ball defense, I did not agree to play the CPU when we set up this match. I do a lot of my work in the post, if I throw some kind of post move down there and you fall for it leaving me with an open layup, that's on you, stay disciplined. Too many users swinging for steals, and jumping for blocks when it's unnecessary. In 2K10, when basket camping was very much alive (especially in Team-Up) I learned that holding LT down in the paint instead of pressing Y to block (where you'll probably miss) will keep your player in great defensive position leading to some sort of body contact shot which the user was more than likely to miss.
The only problem I have with on-ball defense is some instances is the response lag. It's pretty easy to stay in front of your defender, no matter who it is, especially playing tight pressure defense, but when your opponent dribbled left and right back and forth, (some of you guys are in this thread) and defensively when you want your player to react and beat him to the spot, it takes a moment for him to do so, leaving the man wide open. Much of defense in 2K is angles, beating your man to the spot, if you can do that, you will always be in great shape. There are some instances where you will get beat on a possession and that's okay, it happens. Just keep at it.

Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not
I play defense, period.
If you are spending a lot of brainpower worrying about whether you should be "on-ball" or "off-ball" you probably aren't going to learn the game as well as you could.
Is this a debate in Madden I wonder? Do Madden users insist that everyone they play control the nose tackle on defense?
You're responsible for the whole defense, so to get the best results I recommend learning how to play on and off ball, and figuring out what mix works for you and your team.
But I do recommend playing mostly on-ball because I think that's what is most effective.Comment

Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not
Never really cared too much about this topic. I agree that you should learn how to play on ball cause it's just a joke if the other person is passing around the ball to make you defend and you're constantly switching off. But I do completely understand limitations. For me it depends on who I'm playing and the team. If the guy is a very good iso player then I'll play on ball if our teams are pretty equal. But if the guy is driving just purely to kick the ball out to the closest open shooter, I will play off ball to make sure the cpu puts a body on him and then switch to patrol his open shooters and grab a steal when he passes. If the guy has Lebron and no body on my team has the defensive stats to hold him then I'm using my center on drives
Defense is defense. If you're heavily relying on either I believe that can be a flaw as well.Line Up:

this is the only thing i will say regarding this thread or topic.
if you don't play on-ball defense, you should probably just return the game and go play something like kirby's adventureComment

Even if I was a horrible onball defender, I feel like I would rather run a zone and play to the closest defender to the ball or double team, than sitting on someone watching the CPU play my D.

Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not
Off....Ball
According to my VIP i play on-ball like 70+ percent of the time, but i consider myself an off ball defender.
Im crowding the strong side, recovering on shooters off screens, shadowing cutters and hedging hard on screens.
Shout out to my on-ball warriors tho. Takes a person better than I to trust their A.I teammates to close out and be in position when they need them; and not snap your controller in half when dont, and arent.
Keep fighting the good fight tho...Comment

Re: Do you play ON-BALL DEFENSE? Say why or why not
The only time I play off ball is when I need to force a turnover, when the ball handlers dribble is dead, when I get beat on a drive, and fast break plays. I don't do the old, guard the center or power forward the whole time deal. I try to play simulation style basketball, which is tough, but rewarding. It's tough to get used to, but it becomes a habit after some time. I would say I play on ball defense 80-90 percent of the time though, with manual shot contest and 0 cpu assist.Comment
