Thanks, and this is a fun thread, reading the arguments on both sides. I'll just have to get it and judge for myself.

most importantly, CREW(the real crew, not this "crews" bs they're disgracing us with), also my player pickup games, and overall more realistic gameplay.

I don't see how many of these things have been improved though. Defense still works unrealistically, now just worse than it was before. Hop step might be gone but spin layups, spin dunks, animation dunks are still just as bad as they were. Crew may have been hacked but AT LEAST THERE WAS A CREW MODE. I give it to you playbooks though, they're awesome to use nowadays (IF ONLY THEY WORKED IN MYPLAYER WOULD BE NICE). Post game is still one dimensional, with up and unders being completely overpowered and things like hook shots completely impossible to make consistently even against no defense.

I sense that there is probable a lot of nostalgia involved concerning the game.

Nothing wrong with nostalgia. The biggest theme of the thread is that NBA 2K11 was balanced on both sides of the ball. If you wanted to play defense, you could. If you wanted to play offense, you could. If you wanted to outsmart the human offense, you could. If you wanted to outsmart the human defense, you could. NBA 2K11 was the last game where players got PUNISHED if they didn't extend their game beyond exploits.

1-3-1 zones, spinning layups, jacking up 30+ 3's, and wishing you could play METHODICAL defense is the norm in NBA 2K13.

Re: What made 2k11 such a great game?

It has been the only bball game that genuinely blurred the line between yearly released games and non, as far as adding tons of worthy content.

I mean, we got classic teams, we got a new game mode that truely did justice to the GOAT basketball player, we got revamped playbooks, tweaked rating formulas, added tendencies, my crew, an amazing web site that more than a complement or a luxury was a true enhancer of the experience and all while it happen to had a good gameplay balance (on O&D, albeit its exploits, glitches and bugs).

I will say this, 2k11, IMHO is (still) without a doubt, the game that showcased the biggest leap from one iteration to another ... having said that, I still believe 2k13 is/was the best game to build 2k14 upon as I consider its overall package a step forward.

Presenting my excuses for both, MJ and nostalgia, here is to hope for 2k14 (NG) to completely bury and erase the precedent set by 2k11 and imposse itself as the yearly bball videogame that made the biggest jump and that provided the most amount of worthy content.

I liked the defense in NBA2k11, but it had a lot of issues that I think people tend to forget. Off. Reb. were non existent as were fastbreaks. Plus Association stats were a joke. Teams had to many fouls and FT's, and team assists were way to low. For someone who is OCD about stats and Association mode like me NBA2k11 was a complete mess. IMO NBA2k13 was very close to being perfect for offline Association guys like myself. Other than lack of block shots, and the team record glitch if you used CAP's off of 2k share or downloaded a edited roster on 2k share that would also cause the team record glitch, the game was good. Im excited for NBA2k14 cause it looks like block shots can happen at a realistic rate, and the defense looks much improved. I just hope they fixed the glitched that messed up team records if you downloaded a roster or a CAP off of 2k share. I also hope they tweaked Association sim stats. If all this stuff is fixed I will be very happy.

This my friend is your opinion. 2k11 was great because the gameplay was solid. Yea 2k11 had it's flaws just like any other game, but at it's core was balance. Balance between offense and defense. Online in 2k11 it didn't matter what team you selected. Any one could get the brakes beat off of them. In 2k13 you don't need any basketball i.q, you can simply pick the heat or thunder and hold turbo with Labron or K.D to the cup all damn game. You wasn't getting that off in 2k11, and I hope the developers head back in that direction with future installments.

                        * Jumpshots had well timed releases - they weren't too quick or too slow. These flick shots the game is going towards aren't run, nor rewarding. Visual Concepts has taken away the art of knowing a player's release in place of making it more easy and arcade-like to shoot.

                        * 3 pt. % toned down - The uber competitive nature of online games gear towards the easiest path to victory. If 3 pointers are easy to make then people will pick whoever has a high rating and take three's all game. You couldn't randomly take three's all game in 2k11 or you would lose.

                        * Nothing felt cheap - If someone scored on you, they earned it whether it was inside the paint or outside. This kept you engaged the whole game, on defense and made mid-range jumpers, drives to the hoop, dunks and 3's all seem more rewarding and monumental.

                        * Plays - With defense being better it forces you to run plays and rewards you for running plays

If it's too easy to score then the game is not as engaging or fun. That's why I played more games in NBA 2k11 than 2k12 and 2k13 combined. The only reason I played 2k the past two years is because I'm a NBA gaming junkie. The past two releases weren't fun for me.

I am pretty sure 2K11 will be the best 2K this generation, just don't see 2K14 passing it up. Hopefully, sometimes next-gen we get a 2K to take that spot.

Seems like the general theme may come down to how much you played online or head to head. There's so much that can be done to tweak the game for offline play, and so much that has been added the past few years, that it's hard to see how 2K11 was substantially better. I long stopped playing Madden but by far my favorite was M03. It wasn't that it was realistic, there were tons of nano-blitzes and just as well things that could be exploited on offense. But it made for a good balance and I loved playing it online. The way some people talk about 2K12/13 is that it's like Madden 04, where they tailored the gameplay to Michael Vick and it resulted in ridiculous scores online. I don't feel there's anywhere that same disparity with the 2K basketball games, but guessing it's similar for some people. I loved 2K11 myself back in the day; still love it. But as primarily an offline player I don't find more enjoyment playing it over the later ones.
