Great tips in the OP. I agree with everything posted.
FWIW, I've played a lot in the last few days (offline only) and I've gotten far better at stopping the ball getting into the paint, and when it does, making the AI shoot tough shots. Yesterday I picked up the "Hold a team under 40% FG" achievement for the first time - I play 48 minute games and so it's a challenge to keep focused that long
BUT
It hasn't stopped the AI trying to get into the paint on every possession and throwing up tough runners/layups rather than kicking the ball out. And it hasn't made the AI think "Hmmm.. we're shooting 38% trying to bully our way into the lane.. maybe it's time to call some sets? Post ups, curl plays etc." I can keep a team to 85 and STILL give up 55-60 PIP. The AI will get a ton of PIP even if you play amazing defense because all it wants is PIP.
You'll need all the techniques listed in the OP but you need persistence and resilience more than anything else. The AI, with default tendencies, will keep coming and keep coming - like a never ending parade of zombies. You can't take a quarter or a minute or even a play off. If you play 48 minutes, like I do, it's a tough ask.
For me, without trying to sound too self-indulgent, the next step is to try and find a new challenge - once the user has "mastered" keeping the AI out of the lane, the game doesn't seem to have any backup ideas, and victory gets a lot easier. I've never been one to mess with AI tendencies but I think it has to happen this year. It needs more of an offensive gameplan than "dribble at the hoop for as long as it takes to get a layup."
