They took the ability to see the opponents icon away online, so how would you even know they weren't playing "On Ball Defense" unless you were looking to exploit a user's bad player control instead of playing the game? He's out there somewhere on the court, you just have to find him, just like real sports teams try to exploit the "weak link", and opponents try to hide them.

Basketball can be a very fast, team chess match, full of moves and strategies and counter moves and strategies, all at an excitingly fast pace.

My VIP profile says 74% on ball D for me. On-ball Defense 100 % of the time is unrealistic and impossible. If you can beat someone off the dribble constantly with them playing up close on you, but only 10% of the time they play off of you, why is it their fault you chose to keep driving when they adapted, instead of changing the strategy to get the ball in the hoop.

If someone is 'raining' threes on you with Ray Allen and you decide to keep him (Allen) out of bounds to help to deny him the ball (because the CPU couldn't get it done for you) and yet another hot streak, you should be able to. He can go to someone else to score or he can come here and talk about how you didn't let him win the game his way, or how he won but you cheesed.

I constantly see people complain about things that can be countered with the proper team/strategy selection. If you choose to play the same style with the same team, against the same players, you'll get mostly the same results, for and against you. The point of the game, is to get you to play the game the way I want you to, IN GAME so its easier
(in theory) to beat you, not to allow you to be successful at what you do best.

You like to run and gun?, They can walk the ball and hold for 20+ seconds per possession....
You like to shoot three's, They can send everyone to the perimeter and guard the hoop themselves....
You like to drive? They can sag the Defense or play zones to counter....
You Like to pull up behind screens? They can go over the top to try and force a drive....
You like to drive around screens? They can go under and meet you there
Have a great ball-handler?, They can double-team to get it out of his hands every possession.

My point is, everything has an in-game counter, even signature moves(though very hard on some of them).

For example I play with the 76ers most of the time, and their 3 point shooting is paltry compared to most other teams, so I drive a lot, and have become good at getting to the basket a myriad of ways. The guys I play against in my leagues know this, so they devise great schemes to make me change my style, as do I against their styles. One game I might lose by 1-20pts, the next I'm winning by 1-20pts. Rarely does anyone in our "crew" go on long winning streaks, because we change teams and styles to counter each others' wins.

I normally play on the ball man defense against perimeter shooting teams, unless someone is driving me to death, I sag off to try to make them take outside shots, or maybe a zone defense is in order.
.....OR, I might use the zone defense to "rest" players a bit with a lead, to reserve players' energy for key moments, to stop pick/roll or driving situations, and I will switch between them on the fly, per situation.

To try to dictate how someone else has fun is wrong and unrealistic.

By the way, my opponent switching their defense in the middle of my offensive play, when they see something developing is SUPPOSED to break my offensive play, as in real life. Why else would they switch their D to counter what I am doing, unless they wanted me to score of course?

I agree with you to a point. I run a ton of backdoor plays and I want my opponent to adjust. Playing one on one against everyone on the floor, even with double teaming will get you beat sometimes. That said, I hate when people switch off to avoid playing defense. That's just bitch made.

As far as switching defenses, I wouldn't have a problem with it if they reimplement to a 2K8 Offball control where everyone on the court can get open, post up, set screen, or cut to basket. When someone breaks my play, I have to adjust and run another play to put my teammates in certain spots due to zone. The manual offball cutting sucks because players jog instead of sprinting into open space when the user recognizes what is open.

Amusing, instead of talking about the actual topic, you give the typical "play offline" response. Like that will help improve the gameplay of quick matches smh.

I actually like when someone plays off-ball defense, since I know the cpu won't spam the steal button and I can run my sets without worrying about the defender.

But it's absolutely false that it's hard to get past the cpu, I actually have a video tutorial on how to get past CPU defenders, http://youtu.be/8pVot5ic5m8 and I also have a on ball defense tutorial. But I don't want to spam this thread with my videos. You can play really good on ball defense this year, just have to know your assignment and stick to a gameplan.

I can't guard the middle of the court to save my life, so when someone's at the top of the key, I switch to off-ball. I can defend everywhere else.

Sad state when allowing the CPU to play for you is considered a 'style'...even sadder when half the players who fancy themselves fto be sim players support this and have rationalized it away as strategy.

i never want to see someone who doesnt play on-ball D talk about basketball/2k like they understand the game...its not even hard to play on ball.. stop picking teams with tons of outside shooting and no defense instead of the good defense, grind it out offense teams

I just got the game like a week ago (COULDN'T FIGHT THE URGE) and yeah people do some of the dumbest stuff online, LOL. I used the clippers against the heat and the dude subbed in beasley at PF and i was just loling the whole time. I abused him with Blake to make him and try to get the picture. He ended up quitting so i sent him a message asking how beasley at pf worked out for him haha.

This is getting ridiculous, everybody online head to head let cpu defend because it's so hard to get past them this year even when I run plays. Why don't 2k make more effective screens against the cpu?

My last finding is that if I don't even look at if the other player uses cpu defense is better. I just run the plays and focus on the opponent reactions
