Re: Nobody plays on ball d

I do get slightly offended when people say blanket statements like "you don't understand the game of basketball because you don't know things such as horns, pinch post, etc.". I grew up playing basketball, go to games all the time, still play in leagues year round, watch games on TV, so it is safe to say I understand the game. But I don't sit on 2k and run various plays and then say I understand basketball better than the next guy. Plays have always been a frusteration of mine on 2k so I choose not to get involved in it and just play for the fun of it.

Maybe plays are the difference between being a good 2k player and bad 2k player, but they don't make you know more or less about the game.

Re: Nobody plays on ball d

Who are we to tell people how to play the game? It's an online ranked game against a random person. I'd fully expect these randoms to play the style that will give them the best chance to win. They don't care about integrity or "sim" play. They just want to compete & win, which is the point of online random ranked games.

I would love the day we get a perfect game where it can't be exploited. However I'm not going to hold my breath for that day.

OP have you looked into trying to get games with people on OS? It seems as though 99% of the member base claims to be "SIM" so I'm sure you can find a few good games, right?

Re: Nobody plays on ball d

I personally prefer to play off-ball D. And frankly, I think playing on-ball 100% of the time is stupid, in the sense that, if I pass the ball around the perimeter quickly, and you are constantly switching players trying to keep up with me, you WILL lose positioning at some point.

Let me try to be more clear. I remember playing a "sim" buddy who would play on-ball at all times. But I always knew when he was switching. If I passed to my SG and immediately drove the lane, I would have an open lane EVERY TIME because he switched and needed a split second to configure himself to the new player he was controlling.

And I saw this constantly from all my sim friends. They would constantly lose proper defensive positioning because they were switching all over the place.

I like playing off-ball and playing realistically how that player would play. I used to have a little rule I made up, where I would control the player on defense who I just scored with on offense. Other times I would strictly control the PG. It's just how i prefer to play...

Re: Nobody plays on ball d

I hate the responses of "play offline" or "play people you know" - some of us enjoy the competition of playing others. Most of us hate begging/waiting for a sim person to accept a game and want to get right into a game. Why is that a difficult thing to understand around here? Then when you read the responses its from guys who don't play online ranked!

Anyway, I think or hope maybe in the future 2K expands upon the "user offball defense is punished" feature they had in 2K12 in which Human contested shots were more effective then letting the AI contest the shots. Maybe attempt to see if Human on ball defense can be assisted in some way while AI on ball defense takes a hit. Not a huge one but a reasonable one. I'm not sure if the shot contest "bonus" is still in but expanding on something like that may encourage "user vs/on user" situations a little more. It certainly had guys contesting shots in the past - now with the ability for the defender to jump into the shooter it could be awesome.

If the opponent does that cheap tactic of moving the ball around I wait a second before switching players

it's not really cheap to swing the ball around the horn, or have plays with a few quick passes. I don't really care about off-ball or onball d persay, I dislike when guys just camp the lane with a center. it makes for a very boring game.

If its a play from some team that's fine but what people do online is just pass around and drive in, I guess I will try to beat it anyways, camping with the center is proper offball defense and I think 2k should bring a patch to disencourage that. Look at clash of clans of clans for phones they bring patches every month to balance the gameplay, why can't 2k do something similar

Re: Nobody plays on ball d

As I said earlier, I play an anticipation hybrid onball off ball trying to make an educated guess about where someone is going just before they go there. if that makes sense, I want to try to manually stay infront of my man, then get my guy in position when he makes a predictable pass either contest a shot, or force a turn over. But I try to make the switch just before the pass happens. So I can get my self oriented with the new defender in the split second before so a guy doesn't have the opportunity to just drive around me or shoot a quick open shot due to help that I didn't ask for nor did I want.

I have the exact opposite strategy, I want to switch before the pass. Because most times, you know where someone is going to pass, I try to be good at icon switching and and being ready to defend before they can receive the pass, and cancel the help defense the always tries to give up the open 3. we have all seen that play where a guy will start at the top of the perimiter, drive to the elbow, and as soon as they get into a bump animation and see your sg/sf getting themselves into no mans lan coming way too late to help and just giving an open 3. I try to switch to the sg sm a half second earlier, and make that an tipped pass, or be in position to defend that kickout guy. Also I think passes out of contact need to be wilder for guys who basically aren't Chris Paul, or a of the same caliber passer. That would make staying with your man an more viable option because what should be an ill advised pass is pretty much money in this game.

I have improved considerably my offense against these users, an idea is to move the pg for example so that the screen stops the cpu defender

The length that people go to to defend this game is absurd. Is it possible to use on-ball defense? Sure it is. It's just not good. This is an issue with the game, not the players.

If the best way to limit the opponent is to play off-ball, then don't blame the player, blame that awful game.

That off ball defense bonus thing is completely silly, and the wrong direction for the game.

The reason people don't play on ball defense is because it's ridiculously hard. By default, people will blow by you unless you are a truly amazing player with jedi skills.

What they don't understand is that defense should be easy in a basketball game. Then people would be forced to think about what they're doing on offense, and the game could be fun again. In NBA 2K11 and some older games they had it right, now it's just not fun at all, offline and online.
