I've still never used a common bench. I usually put my best 10 players out there in terms of correct positions and then I fill my bench with the next 5 highest players I have.

Just started my first Epic season last night and while I know I won't win the title, I'll be completely fine with making the playoffs or even winning a round or 2. Right now I have no depth at PF or C so that's what I'm hoping I can land.

Bad idea. You should never wait for a card before starting a season. What if it takes a day to get that card, or 2, or more? A season lasts just about 4 days. Let's say it takes you a day to get that reset (which is whisful thinking) do that 4 times over the span of the time you play the game and you're behind one whole season. The only time waiting to start a season makes any sense is if the season/playoffs will be ending at a bad time i.e. during the time you'd be sleep, you know you wont have internet access etc. Other than that you should never wait to begin a season. This even goes for RC. Waiting for RC to be over to claim your rewards and play is also a bad idea because then you'll be starting up with a bunch of other people who have the same idea, and might end up in a super competitive season. The exception to this is if you plan on placing REALLY high i.e. < 125 and playing a few quick games for energy will interfere with the grind. If you're shooting for something in the 600+ range then a few quick games isn't going to make a difference.

Okay, so it sounds like you aren't just grouped by tier, but like a subset of each tier (low-Epics are grouped, mid-Epics are grouped, etc.)

Yes, that's what I've seen in my experience. As I've said before you should play in the highest tier that your best 15 cards allow without exception. Once you're in said tier playing with a common bench can have benefits, but not going to a higher tier because "you don't know if you can compete" is straight ***** given the rewards. There should never be a question about whether to move up or down a tier.

I usually make the jump to the next tier when my bar is 3/4 full with a common bench. No use HAVING to win the finals to get a reward when you can compete for an even better one, and worst case is typically semi-finals if you're playing intelligently (seeding yourself right, having the playoffs at a good time for you, etc.).

As other users have pointed out, definitely play in the higher possible tier, since making it to the quarters in the playoffs is pretty straightforward, and that gives you a reward that would require you to win the whole thing in the lower tier.
