The problem is that forums by definition cannot be trusted to be a "representative sample" of the entire population, and thus cannot be relied upon the same way that representative polling can.

Eric Heimburg, developer and producer for Asheron's Call 2, a developer on the Star Trek Online team and now an indie MMO developer (his project, Gorgon, is actually quite interesting), made a very cogent post about the issues with forums here which you may find entertaining and informing.

It may be a little criticism heavy, but it's as representative of a sample as you will find, especially for free. You've got users from all around the world. Pay users and free users. Old users and young users. It's diverse in culture and opinions. I'm not suggesting to take it as gospel, but it's a valuable resource that's being ignored.

I guess I should've been more specific. Imo 1% is a horrible basis for analysis..

Mathematics and statistics disagree. It's a valid methodology.

I don't think we're being ignored, but I do think that the negative and perceived negative is being improperly weighted, which makes psychological sense since people respond much more to criticism than ambivalence or praise. I also think it's really easy to get defensive or to focus only on the negative. Take the interactions between NWGD and I this evening. On the whole, if you check my post history, I've been complimentary and positive. What he remembered was a snarky bit of a post meant to mock the people who climb up his arse when bugs happen and they take time to fix.

Instead, he took it as serious, did a mental sort and out of his fingers came the declaration that I am like a political fanatic incapable of changing my mind (which I believe is the harshest thing he's ever said about a user publicly).

Worthless to get in lather - it is just tapping and they won't consider it. Somehow sad, as you could really use this opportunity to improve your product to generate even more money.
Maybe we should follow SARP and Apos, cause the grass is always greener on the other side

do you guys think replacing Scottie's Rare enhancements with SR's would be enough to put me in Star++?

Seriously, though, what I'm looking for is a satisfactory explanation. Not to my opinions, to the model. They insist on disregarding fundamental economic principles and I'm curious as to why. I've lead teams of engineers and a favorite exercise of mine is to have a bunch of them think through a problem that I've already solved. I'll constantly ask "why?" and challenge their assertions (right or wrong) until they begin to challenge their own. Only then do they (first) individually and collectively begin to see the answer. Occasionally, they even come up with a better, simpler or more elegant solution than I have. It's a beautiful process and actually really fun.

Will I get my explanation? Probably not. Danan doesn't work for me and he certainly doesn't owe me anything. Also, lead guys often won't engage or take advice from people that they don't know and, really, who am I? I'm just a player. That doesn't mean that I'm going to just sit back and watch a game I enjoy go to sh!t when I see a clearly better (and more profitable) solution. If all of my posts end up with one of them challenging their own assertions and making a change that benefits us all, then it's worth it in my eyes.

On another note, I'm just gonna throw out that I love the change to season rewards. It's so refreshing to just turn on assistant manager (which is dirt cheap now) near the end of season and you can just go to sleep. Before, I always had to either plan out schedules or lose sleep over the playoffs. I also do go for the 1000 credits, if I wake up and I'm in the semi-finals or something.

Nope, that's actually not the case. Prior to AH, packs were their primary method of revenue. Now, revenue comes from both packs and AH. What they lost in pack sales (although I'd bet HOF, MVP and P&P packs still sell), I'm sure they more than made up for in AH profit. It's about increasing revenue, which sometimes means sacrificing one revenue stream for another.

I think he means people buying credits packs for the purpose of getting packs. Now they buy credit packs for both auction house and packs.

Yes, sorry, I should have clarified. Their only revenue is people buying credits. The question is what are those credits being used for? What compels someone to buy credits? Hot streaks (and game nights) are one use for credits. Packs are another. But right now I would imagine AH brings in more revenue than packs, which is okay. As long as the total amount of credits being purchased is greater now than it was prior to AH (at least enough to offset the resources it costs to design, build and maintain the feature), then it's a successful feature.
