The best cards are the Pink Diamond limited release cards. Keep on trying to get those when you can. The next best cards are the Ruby cards, as you can get a Ruby 99 overall in every position. My ruby cards are:
PG - Magic Johnson (All time assists Ruby pack)
SG - Michael Jordan (Funk the Dunk AND All time Scorers x2)
SF - LeBron James (All-Star, only 99 overall LeBron I think)
I've got a bunch more but they are bench warmers or just sitting in my collection, including ATS Kobe who plays sixth man for me.
Sapphire cards are also great and are rewarded for completing collections (several of the '14-'15 teams reward a sapphire version of their best player instead of a Gold historical player). They are also rewarded for some challenges and at milestones in the Road to the Playoffs.
Onyx cards are, generally, overrated. They tend to have lower attributes than the Ruby and Sapphire cards, although there are some players you can get in Onyx that aren't available in any better version, so Onyx is decent if you have a particular player you like.
Emerald are cards for players who significantly increased their play during the season and got a better card than their default one, Anthony Davis being an example of a ridiculously strong Emerald card.
Diamond cards are for completing levels of collection. Lillard is at 750 total cards I think, then Harden at 1000 and Iverson at 1250 (you can look at the checklist, my totals might be off). Those cards are all pretty solid.
If you collect the best player from every '14-'15 team, you get Diamond Durant, and he's ridiculously good. The best player is usually the top left of each team collection, with some exceptions. There's a list easily findable on Reddit via google.
If you collect the Sapphire player by completing every historical team, you get Diamond Shaq. The historical collections are kind of hard to complete on PC, but it was worth it since they reward a Sapphire version of the best player on the team and you can just re-sell the collection and get most of your MT back while still having credit for completing the collection and the good Sapphire player.
I play on PC, else I would give you a bunch of extras I have at minimum cost.
