Not necessarily. I've been using the 3 rare/2 common strategy quite effictively since the very first Rival events with slight adjustments to players. (eg. Replaced old Thaddeus Young with the mid season one). I can easily win 80%-85% of 5 point games. I got 37,000 points using this format in a previous event without buying any hot streaks.
Currently running: Jason Kidd Pro, Thaddeus Young Pro, and Larry Sanders Pro, with Jason Collins and Jerebko (I probably misspelled) being the throwaway cards.
Also using an epic hot streak support which has helped tremendously.

I actually did better with 5 Legendary cards this past RC than I did in previous RCs with 3/2 Rare strategy. I just always played them in their best categories. If Legend pros pop up (usually twice a game) I lose. Otherwise, I did well at winning the other 3 quarters.

For that point total @ 85% win rate (5 point games only), you are playing approx 1450 games a day. Around 12 hours a day? I can't do that. With my schedule, if I went all out and completely neglected my wife, I could get 20,000 perhaps. Not worth it.

9,150 +/- was good enough for Dr J Pro. I'd like to go for a RC card, but I don't think that's in the cards for me.

To be honest, it felt like more than 12 hours a day, lol. I only did it once (2nd Rival event ever back in February). I haven't come remotely close to doing that again and neither do I want to. It just took way too much out of me. And I agree, looking back at it, it wasn't worth it.

Yea, that's true. Happened to me this past event. I had 2500 points and was roughly around 2550th place when I woke up Saturday morning and ended up finishing 365th with 9500 points.

Rumor has it that the next RC will feature the Warriors based off a tweet from NWGameDad.
Warriors vs another team from California seems to be what most are guessing.

having a job where you can play is huge. I made it to top 1500 just by playing on the job.

Find a good LU and stick to it. That has been my recipe for success. I've been using the same LU for a while. Even though I won the last RC, I didn't insert the RC Pro Pippen to my quick game LU. What that does is, it familiarize you with your opponents. You'll be facing the same opponents through out, and with familiarity, you know the ones you can beat easily and the ones you need to back out of. Just my 2 cents
