I know many of you have been asking questions about what “PM” means on the card I posted a fewweeks ago. So, this week let’s talk about the stats.
Last year our stats were derived from the console game’s numbers, but heavily influenced by the position of players. That created oddities for players like Gary Patton who was a phenomenal defender but ended up with low Defense score because he was a Point Guard. When looking at the app for ’15 we decided we really needed a more flexible system that was based more on individual players. We also recognized that we needed a separate Rebounding stat instead of just rolling it up into Defense. After knocking it around a bit we arrived with 5 stats per player: Offense, Defense, Rebounding, Playmaking, and Athleticism.
These 5 stats are based again on the console data, but we individually scored each player based on their numbers in each category. We then set the player numbers based on their overall rating. So for example, a player that was an Inside Small Forward with strong jump shooting and was overall ranked as a middle of the road player would end up with higher offense on his card, but still be in the Super Rare tier of our cards. The new system allowed us to be more flexible on giving players proper stats inside their tier.
For the stat categories themselves, the console game has a huge amount of data we then have to boil down to the stats. With our 5 new categories though we felt like we could more accurately represent all that data. Here’s some of what goes into each category:
Offense – layup, post moves, midrange, 3 pt shot
Defense – Steals, pick and roll defense IQ, defense consistency
Rebounding – Rebounds (heh!)
Playmaking – ball control, pass vision, pass accuracy, assists
Athleticism – speed, standing dunk, driving dunk, strength, hustle
The net result of all this is a more accurate representation of the players through stats on the cards. We hope you all like it.
