i recently tried to play my first online game and it was a frustrating experience - "waiting for opponent" freezes fairly regularly and super slow and choppy fps when it was working at all, as well as seriously downgraded graphics (as if everything were set to 'low'). had to give up after a few minutes.
my question is, what determines the speed and reliability of online games?
is it internet speed, or cpu/graphics issues, or both?
i have decent (but not great) DSL and play on a macbook pro via bootcamp. i only get 28-30 fps (offline) with modest graphics settings, but i'm fine with that, it's plenty smooth.
any thoughts?
