Playmaker, any insight on Live2k6 on 360?

Haven't heard from you, it's as if you're in hiding

Give us the inside scoop on this game when you have some time. Several conflicting reviews on this game so far. Is it too slow? Are the sim aspects improved? Is the stutter in animation as pronounced as the reviews state?

The lack of features such as Dynasty, etc is unfortunate, but not a deal breaker for me. I thought the superstar feature was a nice addition, and although I tried not to abuse it, I could see where this could be an issue for some. From what I gather, the players still execute superstar moves, only this time it's controlled by the cpu. I kinda like the unpredictability of this approach as well.

Anyhow, the deal breakers IMO would be the aforementioned areas of concern or anything that kills gameplay. Please fill us in as I/we know you have the game.

After playing this game, I don't blame him if he's hiding. J/K

I think that EA has layed a nice foundation here, but the game is not worth the $60. I really don't like the camera angles at all, and they only get in the way when you pass the ball up the court on Broadcast or Press. There were supposed to be 20+ cameras, but they never made it in.

If your a graphics whore, than you will fall in love with this game as the arenas, players, coaches, and courts are recreated to the tee. I couldn't believe the detail in the players and coaches alone. I will say that the menu's in LIVE are revolutionary and I hope that many of the sports developers follow suite in the future. It is really nice to be able to call plays, subs during the game instead of having to pause to do all that.

To answer your question above about the SPEED of the game, all you have to do is up the GLOBAL SLIDER for SPEED to 100 and the game moves at a much more realistic pace. You will notice a difference once you have done this.

There is just something about this game that really detracts the fun in my book. Even though I like Madden a lot on the 360, there just seems to be something missing from both games that would have system seller written all over. I'm starting to think it has to do something with the presentation.

I ended up trading in my copy today for NBA2K6 which imo is a better game of ball. I didn't care about the missing features and options since I knew that EA was building this game from the ground up with a new solid gameplay foundation. There was just something that wasn't drawing me into the game which I would have to possibly say presentation. I think this will hurt EA next year if they don't do something quick.

Does it really. Is there some videos with this feature that I can take a look at?

Very interesting indeed! Thanks for the feedback.

I would like the "total package" like most, and superb graphics definately plays a good part of that equation IMO. Basically, I'm 50% hooked with what I've seen of the graphics in screenshots and movies.

Were you able to modify any slider settings? Assign team specific playbooks and save them? I'm asking because as you may know, Live2k6 on PC/Xbox requires extensive slider adjustments to allow for a realistic sim game. This is somewhat unfortunate, but true. Unfortunate in the sense that most people give up on the game before they can even explore further. The end result however, when done properly, is something to behold.

You also mention presentation, and a lack of "flair". Is this in reference to on-court happenings or off it? E.g., menus, etc? The camera deal does not sound good. I managed to find a reasonable angle on the PC version. Don't know if this is the case here. It sure does take away from the action somewhat!

I'm certainly not averse to passing on the game this year. I will download the demo once I purchase the xbox, in the interim, I would like to hear some concrete reviews from those who've tested the game thoroughly, meaning with the inclusion of playbooks, proper or scientific slider adjustments (ala Playmakers set), several hours of play testing in order to acclimate to the new engine, etc, etc. (Not saying that you haven't as I can't confirm this).

Final question. Prior to switching to Nba2k6, had you played this on the regular xbox or ps2? Or are you a new convert? . It does however stand to logic that others would go with Nba2k6 (Which I personally know is a good basketball sim also with its shortcomings) because of how well it plays with minor adjustments. At least this was the case as it relates to the current generation game.

          Thanks much!

My Response: As I mentioned above, yes you can mess around with the sliders as I did with the GLOBAL GAME SPEED sliders to give the game a faster pace than before. I adjusted the sliders a bit to test a few things out, but my problem wasn't that the game played out of whack.

You are able to assign team specific playbooks with LIVE360 unlike LIVE06 XBOX/PS2 where you had to assign them before each game.

My Response: The camera is a problem in this game imo. We were promised 20+ cameras and we were only given 4, with height and zoom adjustment sliders which really don't help too much. When I'm talking about presentation, it had to do with the on court happenings. There is no auto replays, you have to press the left analog down for a replay to work and if you don't press it down fast enough when the icon appears on screen after you have scored, than you miss the replay. You can't see any replays from your computer opponent this way either.

The menus like I stated before off the court and on court are an experience. It shows that EA was thinking outside of the box and has really done something that others are going to be copying. It really helps being able to sub in and out players during the game without having to pause and even setting up plays with this. They did a remarkable job on this and I hope it never goes away.

My Response: I highly recommend downloading the demo first and make sure to rent NBA2K6. This is the only way you will know which game is better for you. I'm sorry but the game is dry and just because it has nicer graphics than 2K6 doesn't mean that this is an enjoyable experience. There are guys that will come on here and defend the crap out of it which is fine. I think that EA has layed down a solid foundation with gameplay which will really help the game out next year if that extra ooompf is added.

My Response: Yes, I had LIVE06 on the XBOX and PS2 before getting the XBOX360 version. I also had 2K6 on the XBOX. I've been playing LIVE since the vs. series back in the late 80's and 2K since the inception of the DC. I feel with Playmakers sliders and playbooks that LIVE06 XBOX 1 version played very nice. I wish that EA would have built their game off of that concept, but not the engine since the skating is finally gone from the previous generation. Camera's and presentation really kill the game for me and I think more so the cameras bugged the living lights out of me. No matter how I tried to fix them.

I didn't want to spend $60 on 2K6 because I felt like it was the same game as the one I had bought for the XBOX. I can say that I was completely wrong. There is a 2K6 game designer that posts in the NBA2K6 board here at OS and since the XBOX/PS2 versions came out, Beluba was always asking people what problems they had with the game collecting this information. They turned around and fixed a good portion of the reported issues before releasing the 360 version. I am impressed with that kind of customer care more than anything else. Even though LIVE is missing features, I really can care less about that type of stuff when gameplay and atmosphere matters most. One more thing is that LIVE has no player emotion, like 2K6 does. It's an interesting concept that has to be seen.

            I hope this has helped.

            Thanks

I will also rent Nba2k6 this year for comparison. Really impressed with the fact that a developer actually visited the forum to gather user issues. More impressed if these issues were truly addressed for the 360 version of the game.

              Thanks.

                Thanks.

There were many issues that VC ended up tightening up from the XBOX/PS2 versions to the XBOX360.

Ditto...I totally agree with Candyman...especially what he said about Live- the speed could be improved and the camera angles just plain suck. Next year Live SHOULD BE awesome. Enjoy 2k6 instead...just my opinion.

Unfortunatley due to work and then holiday travel I was unable to get a system. I should get one within the next two weeks hopefully so i can't comment or speculate on either game.

I've only played Live briefly and it looks great didn't get to touch sliders or anything. From what I've seen and read so far I'm betting that this game with proper adjustment's to camera and sliders can be really good. I can't assist with that right now but in time I will and hopefully it makes the game playable for those who will still own it once I can work on it.

There just aren't enough animations in this game to make it sim. NBA 2K6 has an abundance of animations for different situations and AI that move without the ball and hit holes in the defense.
