Where this game can learn from 2K6 360...

A lot of people have asked me / PM’d me with the “which game is better” question. A lot of comments like “you’re playing LIVE…what’s wrong with 2K6 360”? To those I haven’t personally replied to, I apologise.

As I’ve written a lot about this game, I thought I’d just clarify my thoughts on both games. IMO NBA 2K6 360 is obviously the best NBA game ever made. It has a few flaws, but is very, very good.

It has vastly superior rebounding, better off ball movement where players like Ray Allen and Iverson sprint along the baseline, better play sets (double screens etc) a much superior post game, a more realistic game ‘pace’.

These are all things the LIVE series NEEDS to work on.

Some of the tendencies are also good in 2K6…playing Detroit or Miami in that game is as close as I’ve ever seen an NBA game go to replicating the real NBA. Those teams are done amazingly well…I played Miami and Shaq went off on me for 34 and 17 and played EXACTLY as Shaq should. All his post moves, ball being fed into him, back down and those one handed shots he takes…monster dunks over weak defenders…awesome….

However, IMO 2K6 360 doesn’t get close to the standard it does for Miami and Detroit for some ‘other teams’.

The Knicks, for example, are way off. Atmosphere is also poorer in that game with teams playing in generic arenas…some look like old amphitheatres…it just lessens the games ‘feel’ when you play the Knicks at “Knicks Arena: The Generic Dome” instead of MSG.

LIVE 360 plays a different style of ball…one where you can penetrate and dish which is very nice. It needs to add variety though for teams who play half court ball / run plays all day.

I’d almost go as far to say that, if you want to play as Phoenix or New York and penetrate with your PG all game...buy LIVE 360.

If you want to play as The Bucks or Sonics or other teams that run constant screens for guys like Redd and Allen…or play Miami and Detroit playing perfectly, with Shaq a beast and Rip moving all over…then 2K6 360 is the way to go.

LIVE 360 is nowhere near as bad as the reviews state. With PM’s changes…the game is pretty good. Me saying that doesn’t mean my opinion of 2K6 360 is in any way somehow ‘lessened’. I think some people have misinterpreted that. It is still the better game…

I personally like both games a lot and am playing both. The 360 versions are big improvements IMO…and huge steps in the right direction.

Individual sig J’s in LIVE…Shaq specific moves in 2K6 260…hopefully these “individual” aspects are given to many more players by 2007 as they add so much to the games.

The NBA features tonnes of unique players / teams with completely different styles…and it seems the games are finally starting to recognise that.

I’m genuinely excited about how good the 360 games can be very soon. To be honest, I was getting jaded of these games and just about ready to give up after the reg versions. Now, I’m really enjoying them again.

Just from playing the NBA Live demo, the help defense and ball movement is much better than in NBA2k6 360. That's why I ordered it today.

      Yes...much better.

      The game is pretty cool.

If it could take some of the things 2K6 360 does better...example, the rebounding in LIVE is terrible, off ball movement is soooo slow...and add them for LIVE 360 2007...

      The game would be amazing.

Nba2k6 is the King of Hoops this year in my opinion, but VC really needs to take a page from EA in the Dunking dept.! I mean can U imagine 2k6 graphics with EA style Dunks!! I mean the game(2k6) looks beautiful, runs smooth, has smart A.I. and gameplay and all, but the Dunks are just bland and lacking entertainment value!! Don't get me wrong Live360 need a whole Book from 2k6 as far as making a complete B-Ball Sim. But Live360 will entertain U with their Dunks regardless of Flaws of the game!! So VC please have alot more new crowd pleasing Dunks & also some awesome tip slams and I will be forever greatful!!!

2k6 in general is bland, just from playing the Live demo a million times, 2k needs to take some notes on how shooters don't stand just inside the 3 point line and help defense exists.

I don't think 2K6 360 is 'bland'. It is very strategic / less exciting than LIVE...but that strategy is part of basketball.

Agree totally that 2K6 needs to work on help D...

While 2k6 is the bomb, I must agree Live is more fun. I dont think its unrealistic when using PM edits.

I know its fun when I wake up extra early to get a game in b4 work.

Re: Where this game can learn from 2K6 360...

Very good reads on this thread and I agree with pretty much everyhing that has been said...

2k6 (360) Is a great game and it has kept me very happy with my (360) purchase and I really like the foundation that LIVE has created for next year. I absolutley love the 'challenge' of shooting free throws in LIVE this year. I mean when you make a couple you actually feel like it was you on the line.

Anyaway, I think (2k6) could take a page from LIVE in one of the areas where most of us agree that 2k6 is superior to LIVE, and that's the post game.

Although I agree as a whole, 2k6 has the better post game. I wish VC would incorporate more animations to the post and the paint area in regards to player interaction, similiar to what Live has. Especially before the ball has been received by the post player. In LIVE there are several animations that put the players that are set up in the post area, in position to perform post moves AND it is much harder to find a big man under the rim for cheap dunks because of the excellent player interactions.

However..... once the post player actually receives the ball that's where 2k has a decided advantage in regards to the multiple moves you can perform effectively.

To me in 2k6, it is waaay to easy to just find a roaming big man in the paint for an easy dunk. Therefore, even though you have several moves at your disposal in the post, you really don't need to use them in 2k6 because of the lack of player interaction/animations in the post and in the paint.

Live's player interaction and animations in this area are excellent and really prevents alot of cheap baskets from happening just by passing to average post players and dunking. This is a prevelant issue in the 2k series that could be corrected with more animations and better player interactions (before the ball has been received) similiar to what's in LIVE.

In regards to the dribble and kick game that LIVE does much better. If VC improves the help defense in 2k7 that would allow you to dribble and kick more often. Right now in 2k6 there is know reason to kick the ball back out once you penetrate on the cpu AI, because once you beat your man the D is so slow to react and collapse, that you can just continue your drive.

Obviously some teams should rotate better than others but, in 2k6 the difference in playing the Raptors D and the Pistons D in regards to defesive reactions to dribble penetration should be much greater than it is right now.

I sure hope both games takes tidbits from each other to create even better simulations next year. I've been watching alot of games on NBA League Pass this week (their running a free trial until Sunday) and I must say watching teams play that you usually don't get to see that often, really made me think about how difficult it must be to program an NBA simulation video game. So many things take place outside of the actual context of the plays that are actually being called it is amazing.

It's good to know that both companies have provided alot of hope for guys who prefer simulations this year and hopefully it will only get better for next year.

I think what sums this up the most is that both games creative a competitive market and will force each other to improve and expand. Unfortunately we wont get this in football or baseball next year. We will be stuck with whatever game we get.

                      Very well said

I'm only playing 2K6 360 now and really enjoying it...but we should feel fortunate that at least we have choice and genuine competition for 2007.
