    XBOX 360 Question

    Hey all.

I have a dilemma. I just got my 360, and I'm only going to get one Hoops title.

So which is better Live 06 or NBA2K6? And why?

I love everything which is sim, and play as the Bulls if that matters?

You could probably read and get some info on Live in this thread. As for 2k6 you might have to go over to that forum and inquire.

      Thanks man.

I've been asking around a few forums and everyone seems to say NBA2K. But there's never any reason/s why. I didn't like 2k5 on PS2, I found it ridiculously easy after not very long. There was no AI defense. LIve 06 on the other hand I'm 19-13 in my season so far and I lose regularly against good/ hot teams.

Standard respones is Live sucks, you have to buy 2K6 ...

PM, do you reckon 360 Live feels scripted?

I will tell you that right out the box Live doesn't play very well. You have to get yourself some sliders and then tweak the Playbooks for each team.

Most recently I just put together a Global Rating breakdown for all players because EA screwed up the ratings. Basically, if you need any assistance on the game checkout the Slider thread I have Rosters, Playbooks and Sliders that might be helpful if you purchase the game.

The Rosters take a little time but it helps to tone down some irratating things that the CPU does with all the players have high offensive awareness combined with mostly 80% of the players having poor defensive awareness in this game.

I can't comment on which game plays better because I've only spent significant time trying to improve the overall gameplay of Live. But if someone is telling you it sucks they are probably refering to the gameplay right out of the box as I mentioned earlier. I'm not sure what other guy's did as far as sliders, playbooks and rosters for Live but I'm sure if 50% of them had the patience to work somethings they might have a different opinion towards Live.

But hey it's EA's fault because we shouldn't have to tweak things a great deal in order to get the game to play better. As for scripted I don't see anything of that nature. I would definetly reccomend Live if you can get it used for like $30 bucks. It's not as bad as people make it out to be but it does have some issues. If your expecting a great game you'll be unhappy. If you want a solid game then Live is ok. But it can become a little better if you do the 3 things I explained in the slider thread.

Thats it then. Live it shall be. I've been following a few threads here and the results guys like yourself, WTF, Court Vis and Sir Jam have come up with seems like its far greater (in a realism sense) than what 2K6 is even capable of.

I don't mind tweaking it up to get a good game. As long as the game can be enhanced and the simulation further made realistic, I don't mind taking the time to do it all.

I made Live 06 on PS 2 very playable and I was super happy with the stats and gameplay of it. It took over a month, but once you have it playing the way you want, it seems like a small price to pay.

I'm off to find your slider settings and playbooks ...

          Thanks again!

            Re: XBOX 360 Question

For atmosphere, real arenas and "NBA feel"...LIVE 360 is light years better.

For gameplay, out of the box, NBA 2K6 is clearly better...

However, after all of PM's changes...the gameplay of LIVE really is very good.

Live does teams like Dallas, Jersey, Phoenix, LA much better.

2K6 does Miami and Detroit much better...it's problem is, the Nets and Suns play almost the same as every other team.

2K6 is really limited in what you can 'fix'.

PM has essentially 'fixed' LIVE to the point it's probably the most enjoyable basketball game I've ever played.

I HATE to praise EA though as most of it is PM's work.

            So...I'd rate them like this:

            1. PM's NBA LIVE 06

            reasonable gap

            2. NBA 2K6

            longish gap

            3. LIVE 06.

Thanks CV. Thats exactly what I was thinking, the options to fix problems on the 2K series just aren't there. And with everything I've been reading Live has the epotential to be great. The fact you say it could be the most enjoyable hoops game you've played makes my mind further up.

You mean you can't edit players in NBA2K6? That's basically what PM did with Live

Take the editing into account the sliders changes and with Live they make a big big difference to gameplay when tweaking them. In 2K (from my experience anyway) the sliders have always had minimal relief.

                    You can't edit position.

ie. the Knicks line up is
                    Marbury PG
                    Francis PG

and the CPU subs one out / puts in a SG.

Also, the edits in 2K6 really don't change much IMO. You can edit players ratings, but the structured CPU play means they'll play pretty much the same.

I.e. you can put a post up guard like Ron Artest at SG and they'll still run around screens all day / never play in the post...because SAC is programmed to play that way regardless of roster changes.

Again, I don't like to criticise 2K too much...especially as the guys who make it are kind enough to come here and chat with us.

It does feel very scripted though and that means that edits don't really change much.

Again also, it IS the better game "out of the box".

Live is much, much more accessible though...player positions can all be changed etc...and PM's changes really do change the game into a very good SIM.

i own both, and both can be enjoyable.

i would say camera angles are a huge factor for me, and i find live's camera angles lacking. they promised something like 20. 2k6 cameras are definitely better.

but i am enjoying live also. i got it for $40 off ebay. i think live 07 on the 360 will be the polished game we were expecting for 06

thanks to all who have put in time on live 06 for the 360 to make it more enjoyable.

Agree totally. Cheers to all the guys who've worked on both games with edits and sliders.
                        Agree also re CAMS.
2K6 has much, much better camera's.
LIVE would be amazing if they could add 2K's 'broadcast camera'.
2K took it from ID, so it can't be hard to copy and implement.
It really should be a standard view in ANY basketball game.

                          Re: XBOX 360 Question

After using PM's sliders there are only 2 reasons I continue to play 2k6. The better camera angles (mainly broadcast) and the off the ball movement.

These are the 2 areas where LIVE is horrible. As scripted as 2k6 can feel at times I really miss the player movement when I'm playing Live. Especially with players running the baseline and coming around screens. You do not see this in LIVE and I hope EA fixes the sluggish off the ball movement next year.

Also, although EA did an excellent job with the arena models the lighting in their arenas are waaay to dark. Neither game has this right, however VC's arena lighting is much closer to what you would see in a real game.

I really LOVE the "little things" that EA has in the game. Being a Wizard fan, it was really nice to see Gilbert Arenas, Jamison and Caron Butler's free throw routines in the game. Also the CAP in LIVE is very good compared to 2k6. I can actually have the Wizards wear white shoes on the road as they do in real life. You cannot edit the shoe colors in 2K6.

Props to PM for the work he has done on the sliders for LIVE. Hopefully both games will look and feel even more next gen in the 2007 editions.
