    Production team Q and A

    "
    Hey everyone,

First off, we're all pretty pumped to be able to post on the boards now. For the past couple of years we've been trying to get the approval to post on here, and we've finally won the battle. We're looking forward to being able to answer any questions you guys have, and also ask you guys a bunch of questions on what you'd like to see in the game.

I'm just going to jump right in to answering questions.

The number of new animations we've added in this year are in the thousands. It felt like we were in Motion Capture every other day getting new stuff. Here's a snapshot of things that are new.

Sig Shots - We recaptured the animations and added a lot of new ones. My faves right now are Iverson's and Grant Hill's. Iverson's just feels sick. And, look for some signature free throws. Chuck Hayes' is ridiculous.

Passes & Receptions - We captured a bunch of new content like penetrate and kicks, pick & roll passes and catch and sweeps.

Dunks - We got rid of our old dunk system and put in something MUCH better. I'm happy to say that dunks are back for Live this year. All new animations and a bunch of new in-air collisions.

Like I said, this is just a snapshot. We also have all new anims for blocks, steals, interceptions (some nice 'shoot the lane' pick-offs), post play, locomotion, celebrations, lockdown defense, first steps, quickstrike dribbling (including our new ankle breakers), Pick & Rolls (our new Pick & Roll control feature is nice this year. Jeff can talk about this one though.), a bunch of stuff for mascots, cheerleaders and crowd as well. I'm sure I'm missing some stuff too.

What sorts of animations do you hope to see this year? Any areas in particular you want more content?

Guys are definitely going to hit the floor this year. We have a bunch of collisions on shots and lay-ups where the shooter ends up on the ground. Mike's been adding in a lot of good stuff here. We also have a couple of those D- Wade/Iverson out of control lay-ups where they fall when they land.

As for crossovers and dribble moves we re-captured all of the anims. Last year the controls were pretty tight, but the animations didn't look like the player was actually trying to set his man up. There was no intent to the move. This year the moves all have a little bit of movement in them, and we added in this new feature we're calling Ankle Breakers. The feature's under embargo until tomorrow, but I might as well talk about it now, since it's only a few hours away.

Now you can hold down Right Trigger while doing Quickstrike moves and trigger Ankle Breaker moves. It basically triggers crossover moves with bigger hesitation poses at the end of them. It's your set-up move. Once you get in that pose your defender has to get ready to react because you can explode out of those moves with a first step. If the defender guesses the correct way he'll lock you up. If he guesses the wrong way you cross him up and leave him flat footed. Or, you can even pull-up for a quick jumper. So, essentially, it allows you to take players like Deron Williams, do some regular crossovers to get a rhythm going, quickly break out into an ankle breaker crossover, and try cross your man up and get to the bucket. What I like about this is that it gives our Quickstrike a purpose. There's an offensive and defensive side of it, and creates a "game within the game".

Mid-game jump-balls after rebounds didn't make it in this year. As much as we wanted it, we decided to put our rebounding focus on adding in some new anims, adding in box- outs and making sure they trigger properly, and making sure rebounds don't hit the ground."

Re: Production team Q and A

hey its great to see you here like ncaa and madden and thanks for taking your time to answer questions. I have a few.

1.What has been done with the crowd and atmosphere?
2.Is there any more presentation in game or in dynasty?
3.What has been done to improve dynasty?
4.Have you guys fixed the jump shot blocks?
5.Are there more FIBA teams in 09?
6.Are there more accurate player ratings? Not enough good shooters who are average players. (JJ Redick 3pt rating is in the 60s along with other good shooters.)
7.Are there more go to moves and sig shots?
8.Are there any changes to team play?

He doesn't work for EA - nor do I think he's claiming he does. If you follow the link he posted, producers are answering questions at the EA Sports boards.

Heh, I like how nonchalantly they say, "there is no pro hop and there are no missed dunks"... really? Kind of big exclusions for a basketball sim... some of that stuff just boggles my mind.

Anyway, the game sounds promising and it's great that they got permission to talk to us like the Madden guys have been. That secret feature better be good -- they're certainly hyping it up. Online team play should be awesome if some of those issues are fixed, and all the added animations and collisions sound good.

Please tell me you got rid of the two button shot system - one for dunks, one for jumpers.
Or, at the very least, have given us a new control config option where we can just use one button like the old days.
I hate accidently hitting the dunk button ... and it happens way too often.

            SINGLE BIGGEST FIX REQUIRED: Rebounding
All these years pass and NBA Live players still stand around and watch the ball hit the floor. This must be fixed if you ever hope to get anywhere near 2k.

Thank God -- that was the main thing that would keep me from buying or enjoying this game. Worst control scheme ever... no game should allow you to do 30-foot runners by accident.

Hah, seriously, that just boosted this game like 10x... I hate that **** so much.

I think what is more concerning is that the developers are continuing to get insight from the tournament players. That very concept is one of the reasons last year's version was in such bad shape to begin with. It appears that most of these tourney players focus too much on the arcade aspects and not enough on the fundamentals. I'm still a little worried when I hear the developers say they are "tweaking" features and not completely "overhauling" them. One example is the "tweaking" they are doing for the ball-rim physics. The ball physics engine in that case needs an ENTIRE overhaul, not just slight tweaking. Remember, the developers said they did "tweaking" on these features for last year's version, and we all know how that turned out...

                    I agree.

Catering to the tournament players is very concerning. And I'm almost willing to bet that, this new feature that EA will announce at E3 is online/tournament related.

With that being said, the one HUGE positive that we have in our favor is that Beluba from the NBA2K and ID series is now working on Live09.

And he knows almost exactly what kind of game that sim guys, like here at OS wants.

The only concern I have with that is, we really do not know how much say he has in making Live more of a simulation.

The good thing is that they are currently trying to reach the same quality of the NBA2K series. So, you would 'hope' that was the main reason they tried to acquire some of the Developer talent from VC.

Live is one game that you 'definately' need to see in motion before you draw any conclusions. Simply because the animations, and rim/ball physics have been nothing short of horrible on NextGen.

We will see once the 5 on 5 vids are released. Until then, I'm definately not going to get too excited about anything that these guys put out on print.

In regards to them enlisting tourney players for testing, one of the developers had said that the "tourney players" didnt like the amount of fouls called, saying there were too many.

Those are the kinds of things I dont like to hear because I actually dig fouls being called. Usually you dont even get to the bonus in bball video games.

I added a post regarding this very thing on the thread but I haven't gotten a response as of yet. They are clueless to even care what tournament players have to say. Those are the biggest cheesers of them all.

Yes, when I read that it felt like someone punched me in the stomach. I was thinking, tune it one way for "arcade" mode for the tourney guys, and let us "sim" mode guys have a realistic number of fouls.

Guys, one of the main reasons why we had the tournament NBA LIVE Challenge winners up here was so that we could get some of their exploits out. Don't think we don't realize that there are different audiences playing NBA LIVE. We're having our NBA LIVE 09 community event next week and a representative from OS is coming to that.

Just because we invite a group of people in doesn't mean that's the only group we're making the game for.

Thanks for the insight because I really want to like live. I think Live 08 does some things much better than 2k8. Overall there are just too many flaws that make it unplayable for me. Any chance I could attend that community event representing myself? :-D
