Just wanted to post up some more impressions after really putting this game through it's paces the past 3 days.


Pros: Foot Planting

One thing that has to be mentioned is that the foot planting that is implemented this year (or at least improved since last year) makes everything look more lifelike.

Pros: Dribbling

It takes some practice,but just like in czar tutorial it's really got something to it and actually feels more like YOU decide where you wanna go. It is not user friendly at first,but with practice things start looking a lot better on the court.

Pros: Shooting

It's gotten much more intuitive even though it is more out of your control now. By intuitive i mean in relation to where you are on the court determines maybe 10 to 15 different sot variations along with many signature shot animations which make it more fun to excute with one touch of a button (LOL), but seriously you have to time your shot in every instance or it's gonna look bad. Actually not though because EA has since made it so that even if you press the x button on the outside you do a reg shot(which is a plus because last year you'd go into this crazy lunge because you'd accidently hit the layup/dunk button!)

Pros(graphical/presentational): Stadiums/stadium lighting/cloth movement/replays


A lot is different this year. Stadiums seem to have been redone and gone are the dark candlelit stadiums. The lighting variation really do standout and make each stadium feel different too. Cloth movement! yeah much better now. replays seem to more plentiful and look pretty cool at times. esp with the commentary being how it is, it's pretty class.


Cons: Rocketship Dunks(fixable though)

These need to be toned down for players like DWade,McGrady,Odum. It looks ridiculous at times. Though very RARE it's STILL there. An edit kinda takes care of it already though. I just change there player likeness to another preset and bingo it's out. ex: Dwade to James/McGrady to Garnett/Odum to Dirk...Sounds funny but it works

Cons: "Be a Pro" mode camera not in regular games

I tried "Be a Pro" and they have specific camera for it, but its cool camera cuz' it goes in n out of the action like a live broadcast. kinda wished it was allowable in reg 5 on 5 games

Cons: Running down off a fast break

It works once you grab the steal or loose ball but then midway to the basket your guys animation of running stops and you have again press the x button to excecute the RIGHT animation for it. that might not sound exactly like I'm nit picking,but where I see it is bad is where right before you make the layup your player just kind trots instead of actually running or sprinting up with some kind of urgency. it happens enough where i would like an animation for it when a fast break occurs.

Pros: CPU catch-up.

Some might not like it but i was player the lakers at home with the clippers. i won 90-91(not dissimilar to last year) and I was leading by about 14 going into the 4th. all of sudden i saw this great urgency from the lakers to score. Byrant was getting passed to off post penetrations for threes and everything! It was so cool to see in this years game that i was just sitting back letting em' score as i watched in amazement what was happening in NBA Live 09. it's truly well implented here. I was playing on All-Star and it never felt like the cpu cheated either....

HOWEVER...

This is what makes the contact animations and everything else look completely out of place. Things are sped up to give the impression of animation blending but it does the exact opposite and looks completely out of place.

Before anyone gets bent out of shape, yes, 2k is guilty of doing this as well. However, they do a much better job of blending so the visual outcome doesn't look as ridiculous.

Probably one of my biggest beefs with the entire animation system.

I've seen very few sliding instances due to actually more decent animations. But i see what you're talking about the collision stuff kinda like the mario running in madden right?It can occur when you're just steam rolling through playing the game though(well at least when i played) But it IS hit or miss at times. the speed up you mention rears it's head but i will always say that 2k 's version of it has been worse (meaning this years 09 is better than 2k8 footplanting,howver that's without playing 2k9)


Personally I feel 2k are guilty of NOT having a demo. OK rant over.

Was watching the be a pro video of pasta and you're right, I think it looks more like a broadcast angle than the actual broadcast angle. A middle ground between the two I think would be perfect. I think that's why 2K looks more like a real game, because of their camera angle.

The camera angle certainly helps but there are other reasons why as well. But that's certainly a part of it.
