The whole D needs fixing Mike...everything.

You've done an amazing job with the plays...but the D really needs a lot of work.

It just doesn't 'feel' like you are playing D. I know there's a whole thread here going on about playing it...but even with those tips, there's just so much wrong about it.

Double teams don't really work...you can spin off a big guy in the paint regardless of who you are using (Andy Vajero scoring at will on Dwight Howard)...

CPU guys jumping three meters away from where the ball is...long time problems in this series...

It's the best live ever...no doubt.

But it's still got a long way to go...as I'm sure you know.

You must feel a bit like Doug Collins...he helped create the Bulls and left as Phil Jax got all credit. Everyone's raving about the 2K9 AI being so good and you're the man who helped set it up...

Hopefully you can pull LIVE up to that standard one day.

      I guess you can't answer...but I wonder if you're playing any 2K9 these days?

Yeah interior defense is hit or miss, mostly miss but the foundation you guys have overall means you are a year or 2 from being equal to 2k.

Even with PM's sliders or Tomba's sliders...I can spin off basically any big and score with any scrub. You can score at will with Ben Wallace...when Big Ben can score 20 + on Dwight Howard, you know the interior D needs fixing

Yeah the D is pretty garbage not to mention if you play online like myself a guy can take the Celtics puts Garnett at Point guard and went to the baseline for spin moves and one step dunks every time. As some of may or may not know there is no out of bounds on the baseline you can literally go baseline out bounds come back in bounds for dunks every time. MAJOR FLAW IMO

Re: What do you think of defensive assist?

              Beluba-

Please, for the love of god, DO NOT listen to these guys who are struggling with defense.

As someone who played 2K hoops for the last 9 straight years, and as the person who wrote the defensive strategy guide for this site, I LOVE the way defense plays this year. I relaly wanted to thank you guys for giving defense that "old school" feel of complete player control, as opposed to a simple button press lock on like the 2K series. It is so rewarding to master individual players on defense this year, and it has added to the enjoyment of the game.

As I mentioned in my article, people are struggling with the scheme because it is not the same "2k" scheme that has been used for the last 10 years. People would much rather complain than to adapt their game style from something they have grown comfortable with. I am so passionate about this issue because I have been searching for a game to get me excited about the NBA since NBA 2K1- Live 09 is the first game that has done that. I just don't want you guys to change your game in the 2K mold and lose that "freshness" about the direction the series is heading.

As far as defensive assist I like the feature. The only thing I would change about it is that you should not always gravitate towards your assigned defender. For example, if I am playing man defense and am across the court manually double teaming, when I press d assist, my player will try to go in the direction of my man I was technically assigned to on the court. I think that you should be able to d assist on the closest man rather than your assignment.

Other than that I love your game. I've spent a lot of money on 2K basketball over the years only to have a game collect dust within a month. I am really looking forward to playing Live 09 this year straight through to next season- I honestly have not enjoyed a basketball game this much in a looong time. Thank you for your efforts.

Maybe the defense is fine to you but if a player puts KG or Odom at the point they should pay not be rewarded by being able to glide to the baseline do a quick spin move and dunk every time. maybe the defense inst the cause of this but the quick strike abilities for big men should be scaled back drastically

Re: What do you think of defensive assist?

                  Beluba,

I too am a 2k convert, and I also agree with Bumble14 for the most part. I too see the intricacies of defensive play that he speaks of. However, it doesn't appear that low post play is indicative of size disparaties. For example, I payed as Houston versus Utah and both Okur and Boozer were able to outmuscle yao Ming on the low post, conversely I, as Scola, was able to dominate against Boozer in the low post to the tune of 28pts 9reb 3blks.

Also defending the Pick and Roll is a crapshoot. If I come high the player slips low before the pick, If I play back and twoards the cutter, the Handler has an easy open look. Now I understand that this is the dilema that real teams face, but the help defense is very slow to react, and alot of PnR situation you as the defender are on an island. I guess what I am saying is that it is not the defense as much as it is the Offensive arsenal is too powerful for the defensive tools available.
When Jerome James spins off ANYBODY!!! and does a two-handed jam your low post offense is too strong for the defensive counters.

Lastly, defending the PnR, the QS Moves and the perimeter are challenging enough, and they need to be. But in the low post is where teams in the NBA prove thier mettle. If a patch can be done that will tone down low post offensive play, at least for those players who routinely never amass the stats that they do in Live 09. I mean come on; Dampier lighting me up for 34. He's rebounder/shot blocker, occaisonally he'll get 10-12 points from FT's and put backs, but his number is rarely called. The spin mopve and dropstep should be ratings specific. any big should not be successful. Josh Boone should not be able to be as effective in the low post as Tim Duncan. Right now I know that when I cant get an open look I can always go down low and get the shot or a foul 95 percent of the no matter who i'm using. That is what needs to be addressed IMHO.

Oh... Defensive assist, I don't use it, it appears to have no effect whatsoever. Would you kindly explain how it assists defensively?

                  Peace

                  Mr.Mars

                    Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Defensive assist is the feature that helps users find their check. If you hold down LT (L2 for PS3), your user-controlled defender is automatically taken over by the AI and goes to find his man. You can also flick the Left Stick up to play tight or down to play loose.

I just want to know how many of you use it and find it valuable.

I like it because it helps you center your man in situations where there is some defensive confusion, but like I said before, I'd like to see it allow you to pick up the man closest to you, not just your "assignment".

Guys complaining about th epost game- WAIT FOR THE SEASON TO START. Once DNA starts taking effect I am sure scrubs downlow will begin to start playing more true to life. Personally I play on All-Star with default sliders and have noticed no problems defending downlow. The scrubs play like scrubs, the stars play like stars. If you have issues double team and set the guarded level to "tight". Also, play zone, and mix up your defenses.

As far as the out of bounce cheese, that is an issue online. Unfortunately their are cheesers out there. I'm sure that issue can be patched.

Re: What do you think of defensive assist?

I've said enough about the defense. No need to go into it again here.

As for the assist, it works and it doesn't. I like how it helps you find your man but it's too lazy. You simply just hold the button and it follows your man. That's not defense. Players should have to work at it, not just hold a damn button.

It works well to center your man to where YOU (meaning the game engine) designate the player should be... but if the ball is in the strong side and I'm covering someone on the weakside all that button does is move me towards the strong side. I want it to allow me to do what I want to do and still stay somewhat locked on my guy.

I KNOW basketball... I know I should be gravitating towards the ball on the strong side and staying in between my man. I don't need this button doing that for me, especially if I want to stay tight on my man, or lessen the amount of space between the player I'm guarding and myself.

But that's a minor gripe. Spend more time on the defense and player interaction because it's very shallow. Tapping the block button in the post and blocking the ball with my armpit as the offensive player goes up for a shot isn't real basketball. (EDIT: Ha... I know I said no more about the defense. Guess I lied.)

                          Interior D definitely needs work.
Friggin Miami's Blount had 16 points and 15 rebounds vs. me.
                          He's such a damn no-name, I don't even know his first name - though I think it's Mark.

actually mark blount averaged double figures or almost double figures last year in scoring so he's not a no name

Guess I lied.)
i get wut ur saying but i actually like the way it was implemented because you cant just hold onto it if you want to be in the best possible position...you hold onto it for a few seconds then release when you want to move over a few steps, i think it ups the difficulty level
