Opening Tipoff: Tips please?

Is there a method to winning these or is it completely random? I swear out of maybe 70 games I have won maybe 7 or 8 tippoffs. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Once the ref starts the upswing motion of his hand, press the button. You don't have to wait for the indicator to appear. I'm using mostly the Lakers though (Bynum), I'm not sure if height has something to do with it.

I go nuts with the Y button (triangle) once I see him getting ready to toss it. I usually win most of the time.

I usually press the button and hold it.. and i win the majority of the time..
