How Do You Play Defense In This Game?

Well, I finally got the assist tight and loose figured out... The question remains, how do I play defense in this game?

I tried the defensive stance (down on R-stick) with no luck. I also haven't had much luck with lockdown mode. I just got assist figured out and still haven't had much luck. How do I defend in this game?

unfortunately....this is one area that really live 09 lacks.. hopefully in live 10 we see some improvements

I have the same problem the defense is just downright non existant. People layup on your bigs like they're not even there.

No such thing as defense in this game lol, run a zone or sum thing lol dee in this game is nonexistent but hopefully it'll be much better in next years game.

Ah, the fatal flaw.... I was beginning to think that this game was pretty amazing but if it was, the word would have been out by now. Here's my tips:

Use the D assist with the right stick pressed up to "close guard" the ball handler.

Use lockdown D on bad ball handlers and try to reach around steal by hitting the steal button.

Get close to jump shooters and push the left stick up against them to hopefully trigger a challenge shot animation.

That's all I got, hopefully I can get some stops lol.

Junk the defensive assist for starters. Be selective on when you lock on.

Defense is about anticipation. When I lock on, I try to move the stick towards the defenders ball hand, since chances are, that is where he is going to go...you can then "ride" the ball handler wide.

You'll need to anticipate change of direction eventually though..and this is where being selective with the lock on feature is helpful. You can things such as locking on initially and then back off..or you can stay locked on and change the idrection you want to play the ball nahlder.

There are times when you dont want to lock on at all. When you have a bad defender it just causes more harm then good.

couldn't agree more. I know how to play defense very well. in the post when they get the ball lock on. You can risk stealing the ball however, depending on the player they will spin around you. or you can try and anticipate which way they are going to spin. when they begin to spin you have to push the controller in that direction and press X (not block) this triggers animations to get your body infront of the defender and make an attempt to knock the ball out of their hands as they ar going up for a shot.

Defense on this game takes a ton of work and once you learn how to play it, the game is pretty awesome. I actually love how hard you have to focus in order to play good defense.

You would be shocked at how many times I have shut down the one trick ponies out there by just taking charges and blocking shots off the baseline.

Im not surprised at all. Just about every game I play is against baseline exploiters.

zone def usually helps, and concentrating for the full 24 seconds u dont have the ball because unless your really in the ball players face the entire time theyre gunna make jumpers look easy, the annoying bit is i do everything right, stay on the guy, make him do a tough shot with a hand in his face, he misses, and they get an offense rebounding even when im boxing out, rebounding is the most annoying gameplay feature in this game, i hope they improve it in live 10

The biggest frustration other then rebounding, is when the player gets bailed out nad I force him to shoot the ball, while smacking right in to the defneder, and the ball bounces in anyway.


It's nice that the collision detection is ther, but it would be nicer if I got rewarded for forcing that kind of shot more often.

Another thing. click on the left stick and see where the players cold spots, and cold direction is. Force the player to those spots.

so many guys will not know what to do and have to result to cheesiness. It's pretty funny to see happen.
