Suggestion: separate sliders for "dunking when defended" and "collisions on drives"

I have a suggestion for some new categories of sliders that I have wanted in basketball games for a while now. Adding these types of sliders would help eliminate a lot of the complaints that many gamers have about basketball video games.

    1. Add a new slider for "dunking when defended." by this I mean a slider that controls the players' ability to dunk when a defender is directly in their driving path. The Lebron dunk over Garnett in the recent "size up/dribbling video" posted by stephenson is a good example (i know the difficulty was turned down, but i'm just using this as an example). Garnett is clearly directly in Lebron's path, but somehow like they are both covered in vaseline, they slide out of eachothers' way and lebron manages to get the dunk anyways. If there was a slider to prevent players from even starting a dunk animation when defenders are in front of them, the gamer could simply lower the slider if there are too many of these dunks occuring for that gamer's preference. this way, if a guy tries to dunk when a defender is even partially blocking his path, he will instead be forced into a layup animation (try to float over the defender or lay it in around him).

    2. Add a new slider for "collisions on drives" which would control the ammount of bumping and contact that occurs when a player tries to drive. if the "collisions on drives" slider is all the way up, the players would be more sensitive to bumping and collisions with defenders.

If there were sliders for these things, every gamer could adjust them to fit their preference.

I love this idea. If I'm correct, it's similar to 2K9's Dunks In Traffic slider (which I put to 0, I HATE seeing JR Smith rise in traffic for betw the legs dunks WTF)

Also, the Collision On Drives would be like the Collision Detection slider that was in NBA2K8 (that for whatever stupid reason 2K took it out for 2K9) but concentrated on drives to the paint.

Great idea. Actually, 2K7 had a great system where if you could actually start your layup/dunk animation from about 15 feet with great players, but on the way to the rim, if people got in your way/bumped you, you'd transition into a "contact" animation which would alter the final shot. I loved that.

From the first video EA put out tho, I was just watching it and it looks like you won't be able to just rise if the defender is there all the time, b/c there were a few instances where players tried to just rise, and got a contact/lose the ball/altered shot animation, so here's hoping.

Great idea though, or just give us a Collision Detection slider at least.

I don't like the name "dunks in traffic", because a guy can be in traffic and still not be contested. by saying "dunking when defended" that implies that a defender is actually impeding the path to the hoop enough to force the other player to change his shot to a layup animation or floater.

the problem with calling it "dunks in traffic" is this...let's say a guy gets the ball right under the hoop and there are 2 defenders in the paint near him, but neither defender contests him or is in his way...he should still be able to get the dunk as long as there is no defender in front of him to prevent his dunk. Technically he is still in "traffic," but he should still get the dunk in that situation.

By calling it "dunking when defended", you ensure that a defender has to be blocking the "dunk path" enough to force the other player to change his animation to a layup or floater attempt.

        .
Yes "collision detection" slider would be nice, but I still want an even more specific slider dedicated just to "collisions when driving," since this particular issue is so important. This would hopefully eliminate those situations where the ball handler appears to be covered in lube and just slips around defenders and gets to the hoop without his progress being altered in any way. Even a slight bump from the side can alter a player's driving path and force him away from the hoop, so having the "collisions when driving" slider turned up would make sure that even the slightlest contact with a defender would trigger a slight collision animation or change in his direction.

Just watch the Lebron dunk over Garnett in the dribbling video posted by Stephenson (i know the difficulty was turned down, but i'm just using this as an example). at one point KG gets directly in front of Lebron - in real life Lebron would've bumped into KG or at least would've had to attempt a floater, change his direction, or stop his drive completely...instead, KG and Lebron kind of "slip and slide" past eachother with no visible contact at all and the dunk animation completes with no interruption. these are the types of situations that really need to be looked at. EA should devote a lot of time to these contextual collision scenarios and make sure there are various subtle animations for virtually every type of bump and collision that can occur.

I don't know if they have this already, but if not EA should appoint some kind of "collision czar" who studies collisions of all types and makes sure there are proper animations for every type.

          Yeah you right.

When you have a defender between you and the hoop, you should get a whole new range of "Dunk attempt with contact/altered to an acrobatic layup/altered to regular layup" animations. It's one of the reasons I stopped playing 2K9 weeks ago (Fallout new DLC & COD4 parties also factors lol) is because I just CAN'T STAND players going through with their layup/dunk animations as defenders are magically moved/pushed out the way, and there are hardly any animations of contact.

But also, they should try to account for defenders that are on your hip as you go up to finish. Like Lebron can rise once he beats his man pretty much anytime after he's got a step on him, but there are many players who can't do anything real acrobatic or rise all crazy with a beaten defender on their hip, players like Ariza, Courtney Lee... you see them throw down once in awhile, but mostly on breaks

EA has done the collision thing in past Live games

Its not as fun as you think, especially since it ends up having to use a forcefield to make certain things happen

Its better if they just program it in the game right. Either you're going to have a canned animation like in Live 04 where you get raped by the D or you have bumping and 1s far too often.

Ill wait to see if either game has done this right this go around. Main thing is its done alright in CH2k8 enough to satisfy
