I don't know what that means, but okay. I know a sim is like the true representation of the sport right? So it should look, sound, feel and play like it. Am I wrong? If so let me know...
I think we were both a little off. I never thought of sim as the whole package, I only thought of it from a gameplay standpoint. I would say that if the players do, act, perform like they do IRL, then it's sim regardless of how it looks. I can now see how others would say that's only simulating part of real life. I still prefer game play over all other aspects but I do kinda get it why graphics and animation matter so much to others.

For me gameplay is #1. That has to be right, then graphics #2 have to be right behind it.(arenas look like they do irl, the players have to look like themselves, the court and the crowd.) Basically when i play a basketball game i want it to look and feel like the real thing. So that means i want everything in it that portray to the sport.

Well, now that I've had a little more insight on the subject. To me GamePlay is and always should be the most important factor, because that's what your doing is "game playing". All though I still think graphics and all the other small things are just as important to bringing the game to life.

I think Realism is most important, I want to play a game where you have to outhink me and outplay me to win. I can deal with a little sliding here and there, but as long as it looks, plays, and most important feelsd like real basketball, I'm all for it.

Re: What matters the most to you guys?

I disagree with you guys. I think presentation is first, then gameplay. Now as long as the game is playable, it'd be a good game. It doesn't have to be the best game, gameplay wise, but if its nothing really wrong with it and its just a solid game that looks beautiful, it'll have high replay value.

For example, I only played the Live 09 demo and I played it a lot too. I enjoyed the game, but I didn't buy it because the faces were disgusting. The game was playable, but I couldn't buy the game and pick Denver, knowing the players look like monsters. It just took the whole realism out of the game.

Thats why I think Live can easily surpass 2k. Presentation wise and graphic wise, Live is better than 2k. The problem is that 2k gameplay is unbelievable and while its not better than Live presentation wise, its not bad either. Now if Live gameplay is playable, nothing really bad that sticks out, and everything as far as looks is authentic, it'll surpass 2k.

Thats why I think its getting a lot of love from the companies previewing the game demo. It looks beautiful and the gameplay is good, although it has a hiccup here and there.

Re: What matters the most to you guys?

^ haha birdmans face did look awful in Live 09. O and dont wanna take this into a fight between 2k and Live. But 2k does not have unbelievable gameplay. It is solid but it still has a far way to go to get to unbelievable. If gameplay is unbelievable you should be able to watch game play from NBA 2K9 and real NBA games and not notice a difference other than graphics. If they got rid of extreme sliding and the game being a dunkfest it would be very good.

But anyways to me what matters most is always the gameplay. People nitpick about certain things about the presentation and stupid celebrations after they score but if a game has great presentation and bad gameplay I cant play more than a week.

No game will ever have great announcing because they will always have repeating lines. I believe MLB 2k9 did an amazing job with announcing. It was completely fluid and sounded like real life. But usually I play while listening to the TV volume or music.

The most important thing to me is the fundamentals of basketball. Off-ball movements, hustle plays, good defense (not stupid lock down D), good rebounding, and fastbreaks, and lastly Signature Style. Fastbreaks has never been done effective in a video game. No players ever "push" the ball in front of them while dribbling. Also passing has been awful in video games. Where are the great passes? The ones where you bullet it between the defenders to a cutting teammate. Or a flashy behind the back or no-look pass. Good passes and no-looks are said to be in Live and thats why Im pumped. They finally have the fundamentals down.

Sig Style is also important. I want Dwayne Wades hopstep, Kobes jumpshot down, and Lebrons rosin. But you may say 2ks sig style is better than Live because they have more FT routines which are cool. But DNA is the best Signature Style ever created. Players play like themselves which is just awesome. Great gameplay and Sig Style is in NBA Live 10 which matters most to me which is why Im most likely buyin it.

Unfortunately I cant afford Live 10 and 2k10 so I gotta guess off the demo. Lemme just say Live 10 is in the lead right now.

Re: What matters the most to you guys?

Options is supremely number 1 in my book. If I don't have customability in the game I won't play it (APF2k8 being the best example).

Gameplay is usually dependent on sliders, clock options, playbooks etc....

Presentation is very important and that is what kills EA games for me. They have brought nothing new to the presentation area in years although NBA Live was the first to have a simple replay option that was fantastic. But 2k games have this down. They are just amazing to play game after game, always immersed and never bored.

Graphics really play no part for me anymore. I mean the point they have reached on next gen is beyond what I need so this doesn't factor into the game for me at all.

Re: What matters the most to you guys?

I think all gamers in all forms of gaming life and appreciation really feel that good gameplay is the root of any good game. The bells and whistles that these developers issue in their games, and that so many of us have become accustomed to, kinda become a crutch of sorts--or in more naive cases, justification--on why we spend so much money and argue pointlessly over nothing that truly deals with the game itself.

In the case of basketball sims:

                          1. Yea it's really cool when I see Kobe is wearing his most recent shoes, that just so happen to be matching the 1980 throwback I got him in. But what matter does it make if I'm playing on a "throwback" TV that's not 40" wide and in hd?

                          2. And it's really coo if every time I play against Detroit I know I'ma hear "De-Troit Basket-Ball!!" blaze throughout the crowd and send chill down my controller because I'm down 5 with a min left. But again, what matter does that make when I'm so pissed that I just got PUSHED backcourt by the lame Super D that some goober online learned how to exploit that I don't pay it any attention!?

Somewhere, stored away (or close at hand) is a 8/16/24/32/64 bit game that looks absolutely nothing close to 2K or Live, that we're all willing to spend the same amount (if not more) time playing to our hearts delight. It's gameplay that's kept that bond between us and those games. The fact that we know at any given time we can pick it up as if we'd never touched it before and play it likes it never went out of style is something that not too many next gen games have claim to fame.

                          (sigh)
So in short... Gameplay = #1

Re: What matters the most to you guys?

I think all together it's certainly a package of all. For me it's rather a matter of if there is something, what make the experience unsatisfying.
Mostly that is a lack of control. 2k9 had these problems. If I don't have control the game can have the best graphics or presentation ever, it won't keep me for long. At the end I am playing a video game so I can expect that my guys do what I want...otherwise I could also watch a real game.
The next thing is the AI. I mostly play offline, so I want a realistic experience with the AI. I want to get beat in a realistic way and not get cheated. If that's the case I could loose all day, I wouldn't mind.

So far these are the majors making me buy and enjoy the game for a while.

On top of that I need an amazing presentation, which gives me a feel of excitement only a real BB-game could give me. If my puls comes to 150 b/c of the crowd getting excited and the commentators going nuts due to an Bulls - Celtic - Game - 6 kind of game, than I am in video game heaven...This also includes Stadiums, variety of teams, signature stuff and even depth of the game (especially dynasty) imo

Pretty much at the end is graphics. I was thinking about it for a while but looking at the games I am playing lately I am very confident about what I wrote. I play CH08 at the moment over 2k9 b/c it's simply more exciting althought the graphics are rather moderate.

Accessories, rim nets, 500 shoes and other minor things are great additions but won't determine whether I buy a game or not...However they add to package of course.

                                1. proper floor spacing
                                2. defensive rotations
                                3. proper passing angles/realistic inbounds- no throwing the ball to half court
                                4. teams playing like real life counterparts
                                5. sig shots/style
                                6. proper game logic, ie rotations/timeouts/substitutions
                                7. varied and plentiful realistic animations (Steph, not really feeling the bigs shooting that clumsy hook on put backs. They need to go towards the basket, not away from it,and use glass.)
                                8. the ability to play effective on ball defense
                                9. presentation/graphics- gotta look good, feel like a broadcast. this also includes accessories, shoes, etc.
                                10. can we get the fastbreak done right
                                11. player models
                                12. good stat engine

These are my top 12, not necessarily in order of importance.
