Utilizing the off-ball controls in NBA Live 10 with BBallGuru [Video Guide]

Let me start off by saying that I’m new (first time since ‘Toine on the N64) to the NBA Live series this year. I felt it had great gameplay, and the off-ball controls allow for the most authentic basketball experience I’ve ever had while playing a video game.

I decided to create this guide to help out other simulation players with the game, as well as people who don’t understand or may not be highly knowledgeable in the game of basketball. The latter I’ve seemed to run into quite often online. So, without further a due, on to my guide on utilizing the off-ball control in NBA Live 10. [All videos are taken from games played on Superstar]

Situation 1: Calling for a screen with an off-ball wing

In this situation I position Chauncey Billups on the left side of the court, just across the half court for adequate court spacing, as well as a good passing angle. (Remember, basketball is a game of angles)

Now, I take control of J.R. Smith who is in the right corner of the court and call for a screen. Kenyon Martin comes and sets the screen, and after he’s set (It’s better to be late than early coming off a screen, don’t want to get your big man an offensive foul), I slowly walk my man down below Martin to set him up, and then explode off the screen. (Two ways to beat your man in basketball: change of pace & change of direction)

As I come off the screen, Elton Brand shows in an attempt to give Dalembert enough time to recover, but Dalembert is too slow and J.R. is left for an open jumpshot. Swish.

If you’ve played basketball, you know that more often than not, the player setting the screen is the man who ends up open. This is a miscommunication by the defense which is quite common in real life.

As I’m bringing the ball up the court, I notice this, so I take control of Nene and bring him to the high post. I call for the pass, receive the ball, and take control of Carmelo. Knowing that Dalembert isn’t exactly the quickest player in the league, and Carmelo is, bring Carmelo up to the free throw line extended, and dive to the basket with the jets on. When I see some separation from Dalembert, I call for the pass and it results in an easy 2 points.

On this fast break after a missed basketball, I bust out with J.R. Smith and call for the long outlet pass. Carmelo Anthony breaks down the court in the right lane, leaving the center lane wide open. As I get to the 3-point line with Smith, I notice Nene is slightly in front of his defender. I take control of Nene and sprint with him down the middle lane. Iguodala is defending Carmelo on the right side, so what was a 2-on-2 has now become a 3-on-2, leaving Iguodala to make the decision on who to guard: Stay with Carmelo in the corner or cut off Nene. He chose to stick to his man, which gave me an easy lay-up with Nene. Had he slid into position to cut-off Nene, I could’ve thrown a skip pass for an open jumpshot or drive with Carmelo. Like in the first situations I posted, the outcomes are limitless dependant on how the defense reacts to what you’re doing. It’s up to you to make the correct read.

Just like I’m sure many of your coaches have preached to you, and even Steve Kerr mentions, play the inside-outside game.

This sequence starts with a simple down screen for Carmelo Anthony to get him open for a wing entry, and then he dumps it in the post to Nene. As I begin to back down, Elton Brand comes over from the opposite block to double, forcing J.R. Smith’s defender Lou Williams to drop and take away Kenyon Martin as an option, which in result leaves Andre Iguodala on the off ball side of the court splitting Chauncey Billups in the corner and J.R. Smtih at the 45 degree angle.

Iguodala is playing closer to Smith, so I’d like to throw the ball over Nene’s left shoulder to Billups in the corner, but it’s simply too congested with Brand, Williams and Martin to get that pass through. I decide to take control of J.R. Smith, and bring him into the middle of the court, forcing Iguodala to make a decision to guard either Smith or Billups. Iguodala decides to stay with Billups, giving me an open J. The defense attempts to rotate, but is just too slow. Swish.

Again, the possibilities of what you can do out of this are endless depending on how the defense plays it.

Great post, my man. I always forget about actually controlling them off-ball and normally just use the quick control just to get a better angle for the pass. I need to get quick on the switch like you are so I can actually put it to use in situations other than just getting open with a wing player. The post play was gorgeous in particular... this might open up the fast break a little more too, since that area of the game still needs work in terms of getting odd-man breaks.

Great post, I have been using the off ball controls in the post, but how do you switch control on a fast break? I guess it's the same way to hold down two both buttons at once, man my fingers will have to get quicker. Great post.

Nice post, just wrote a similar blog about it yesterday. I'm using it so much, in every situation. Transition game, back doors, basket cuts, inside out, dribble handoffs, etc. You can do SO much with this, I'm getting to a point where I use OBC on half of my possessions and it'll probably increase as time goes on.

I also can't wait to use it in NCAA '10 where it's even more of a team concept on offense.

You are absolutely right man, awesome post. Off ball controls is the key to using everyone on your team, and keeping people..and the AI honest.

Its great for using guys whos strength is cutting and finishing at the hoop.

Yes great post i made a thread about this a while ago. A lot of people didn't seem to understand the power of the OBC. I knew that as soon someone put up some videos on it people would start to realize how great it is.

awesome post man....my boy showed me this stuff not to long ago, and ive been using it since...Lives half court game is simply amazing in alot of aspects...which why I keep giving it a shot lol

Its the B-button on the 360 controller to call for a screener once you are in off ball mode..so it would be the O button on the PS3 I think?
