Re: How you run plays?
Hold LB, push the button corresponding to the play you want to run.
Move to the red circle on the floor. This will get the play started.
Pass the ball to any player that has an A icon. This will progress the play forward.
Anytime you see an opening, take it. Remember the play doesn't have to unfold exactly as diagrammed.
To access more plays, hold LB and push RB.
You can change the 8 default plays in the pause menu. Not only that, but you can change who the play is run for. For instance, you can choose a play designed to get the SG a three point look, but change the play so that it gets your PF a three point look.
Hope this helps. -
Re: How you run plays?
I've found that running plays is the meat and potatoes of this game for me.
I love it.
I basically call the same play for all of one quarter, exploring it's ins-and-outs from different spots on the floor, and throwing to different people at certain times. I've got a few plays down pat as the Celtics that are just beautiful to watch run.
My favorite is Wallace Floppy Down:
Rondo passes down to Ray Allen on the Wing.
Rondo breaks hard to the hoop.
Allen hits him with a perfect lead pass going down into the key.
Sheed or Garnett is posting on the far block, and if the opposing center comes to me on the drive I can alley-oop it for a big dunk.
If the center stays over there, I lay it up.
A gorgeous play. My goal is to practice several other plays and get good at them. Then I can start exploring other team's plays. There's a lot of meat to this game, easy to overlook it.Comment

added note...the player you are supposed to pass to does have the A icon over his head. It will be grayed out if he is going to run through a pick or make a cut first, so wait until it turns green. and also, make sure you arent pressing any direction on the L stick when you make the pass, otherwise it will do a normal directional pass.Comment

Re: How you run plays?
Plays run beautifully in this game. The offball movement is the best in any nba game I've played. I love the off ball contact animations. I like that passing lanes matter. It just took me a little while to get used to the Live system.Last edited by oOausarOo; 10-20-2009, 03:04 PM.Comment

Re: How you run plays?
I disagree and it is the only thing holding me back from absolutely loving this game. 90% of the time it seems like I make the initial pass to start the play and players just stand and dont move to the spots they are supposed to go. Its incredibly frustrating!!Comment

Re: How you run plays?
Depends on the play Moemoe, I think some plays ARE DESIGNED to be just one pass. Catch-and-shoot, basically. Definitely try different plays out in the playbook and don't forget the additional "pages" of plays.
Go try Boston and do that Wallace Floppy Post and when the PG dives down toward the hoop hit him with a pass and lay it in on the run, and then sit back and enjoy the replay from five or six angles.
It's beautiful when it works perfect, basketball as it's meant to be played.Comment

Also, something that helped me last night was doing like one guy here said to do and that was run one play for the whole quarter so you can see the variations of the play and remember where everyone goes. This helped quite a bit last night.Comment

Re: How you run plays?
Yeah I love running the same play starting it with different players, making the intial pass different, etc... so much variety. I also love just using the plays themselves as a shell of an offense and then branching out from them when I see a gap in the defense or using off-ball control to make the plays more effective.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

Re: How you run plays?
When you're running a play you'll see an A or X (depending on PS3 or 360) above one or several players' heads. Wait until the icon lights up before you pass to them. When their icon lights up that means they are at the correct position on the floor for the play to be run, and receive the ball. If you pass it before the icons light up the play will be come broken and movement will stop for the most part.
It also sucks that there's no practice mode for plays, it would really help people. I would stick to the advice in this thread though and play exhibition games and just run the same play a dozen times in a row to get a feel for it. Looking at the play diagrams helps too.
In Live 10 you really have to know your team inside and out to be successful with them; sig shot releases, playbooks and DNA tendencies are a huuuuuuge part of the game play. Way more than any other basketball game I've played. I'm pretty nasty with the Knicks right now because I've played so many games with them and know them well, when I go to other teams (and obviously better teams) I'm less successful quite often.Last edited by ehh; 10-21-2009, 12:25 PM."You make your name in the regular season, and your fame in the postseason." - Clyde Frazier

Re: How you run plays?
Keep in mind too that the effectiveness of your plays has a lot to do with who you're playing, and how good they are defensively.
As the Celtics, used my Go-To plays repeatedly against the Knicks and just TORCHED them! Won by 30 going away, was never close.
Those same plays weren't nearly as effective against Orlando (I lost) or against Cleveland (won by 7). Better defenders affect how good you're able to execute. That's very cool to me.Comment
