Can the average player enjoy this game? Poll

In the 2k forum I read a similar thread and I want to hear your opinion on live 10.

I honestly do not enjoy nba live 10. In fact I quit playing until the patch comes out. The AI is either too strong (allstar, superstar) or to weak (rookie, pro). I know many have similar problems. There are many average players, like me, but there is no average difficulty. It's either playing one on one against lebron james or my grandma.

The thing that I find interesting:

Obviously the game sales are not so high (in fact lower than 2ks) and many who bought it are not satisfied, mostly because of the frustrating gameplay.

Is live heading in the direction to make games for a few hardcore gamers that spend many hours a day with the game and are average gamers, like me, that play about 3 games a week left behind? What do you think?

How do we define average? It seems you are using yourself as an example of average and you already said you can't enjoy it. What is the point?

Basketball is basketball. The highest difficulty in any sports game usually requires some getting used to, but other than that you should be able to use knowledge of the sport to succeed.

Anyway, I try not to concern myself with AVERAGE people...

heh, just joking. Keep playing you'll figure it out.

      Hi ILLSmak

      thanks for your reply.

quote: "The highest difficulty in any sports game usually requires some getting used to, but other than that you shouldbe able to use knowledge of the sport to succeed."

How do you define some? It usually takes about 10 games for me to adapt to a new basketballgame. It took 3 games and I was able to compete on All Star difficulty against the 2k10 cpu. But I played about 15 games of NBA live 10 and see absolutly no improvement. The CPU gets unstopable runs and blows me out.

If you would take away the runs I could compete against the cpu. Close to 90 % of the time my game is great, but the cpu runs destroy that within a few minutes. very, very frustrating. And this has nothing to do with knowledge of the sport.

It's such a weird time in the gaming industry now. Developers see the success of the Wii, and are focused on reaching out to casuals and noob gamers, IMO. Concentrating on sells much more than an authentic, or original product.

You say you're an average gamer, but, you complain about the game being too easy. Seems like a contradiction. Usually "average" gamers don't complain about games being too easy.

You make a good point about the difficulty levels, though. While I feel that most games (especially sim sports games) should only offer 3 difficulty levels, one of those levels must play parrallel as much as possible to the sport it is representing. And regardless of real life skill, or knowledge of the game, or even gamer skills, at least one difficulty level should focus greatly on accurate physics, A.I., and differences in weight.

Difficulty levels mean little to sim sports games, and more to sim sports games' sells. Regardless, with 4 difficulty levels, and none accurate to the real sport, is baffling, and a huge disappointment.

NBA LIVE 10 might be the best basketball game I have ever played. It plays like real basketball. Sports games are meant to replicate real life, so the "average" gamer should not complain if the game is too difficult.

Theres a huge curve, especially if your coming from another game. You can do it though, it doesnt take extensive basketball knowledge lol. Give it a shot, its a great game.

Re: Can the average player enjoy this game? Poll

I think EA's biggest mistake with this game is not putting out a detailed manual for this game. I understand the reason they put the pamphlet they call a manual in the box may be due to printing cost but I still think it is a very bad idea to assume others will "just figure it out" as to what it takes to succeed according to their interpretation of "sim basketball". If not in print why not a detailed and I mean detailed on disk help file. They could explain things like how to properly gap your check according to how the game has it programmed, how to stop runs, challenge shots, all the things that many gamers are struggling with. Then they could give a little spiel on B-Ball philosophy to help the "average fan" who's so source of basketball information is ESPN and TNT. I understand what you mean by the "average fan" and I think this is great game that COULD be enjoyed by all if EA would take the time and effort to explain a little more about HOW to play and not just give the controls and say "gidder done". I can't help but think of the fact that one of my daughters is in driver's education right now, would I just give her a little pamphlet or a quick tutorial on the cars controls (steering wheel, accelerator, brakes, etc.) and say: "...now go drive and have fun, you've seen many people drive throughout your life so you should know the gist of it. Just start with the easy levels (back roads and no highways) and work your way up?" I know this game isn't that serious but wouldn't most people find this game more enjoyable if they at least knew what they were doing and why they lost?

I had similar frustrations to a lot of guys here when I was losing and couldn't figure out why, it wasn't really because I don't know b-ball though but it was because the way I see some aspects of b-ball isn't the way it's been programmed into the game. That's where I think a manual would have helped. On the other hand I figure it out so most others will/can too, but why force them to or expect them to put so many frustration hours into something that's supposed to be enjoyable?

Re: Can the average player enjoy this game? Poll

I enjoy this game a lot..and this may be the 1st sports game in a long time, that stays in my rotation, for a full year until the '11 version comes out.

This game requires you to know some hoops, and not rely solely on some numerical rating that some developer believes that the player should have.

I cant fathom ever going back to not having player specific DNA.

The AI will challenge you, no doubt, but there is nothing cheap or predetermined about it.

there are some issues that a patch can clean up, but other then that, I'm golden and pretty dang satisfied.

I think if people are having trouble, they need to just be okay with playing at a lower difficulty level.

That's why the game has them.

I often find it weird how people say, "I'm playing on allstar/superstar/HOF/all-Madde/heisman, and am getting beat every game and the CPU is unstoppable."

to me, the choice is simple. If you find you cant cut it on the higher difficulty levels, you can either

                1) keep playing the same way you have always been playing, and continue to be frustrated.

                2) Change the way you play, learn how the game works, and how to use the tools that you have to work with until you gradually "figure it out" and are able to compete.

                3) Adjust the difficulty and tweak the sliders some, to get the challenge you want...within your own skill level and gameplay style.

                For Live, I chose #2

Every game is different. In Live, I can play on default all star and get good, realistic, challenging games.

In 2k, I absolutely cannot play on any level higher then pro. In Madden, I absolutely cannot play on all madden difficulty level, yet I can play on heisman in NCAA just fine.

Its all about being comfortable at were you are at iwth the game, and doing a tweak here or there, until you are gnerally satisified with the experience.

Its when we stubbornly stick to option #1, where things get ugly..and that's what some gamers tend to do..and thats how we end up with the "ARRRRRRRRRRRGHHH SCRUBS ARE LIGHTING ME UP!! THE CPU WONT EVER MISS A SHOT!! AAAARGH!!" threads.

^ I agree but I still think #2 could be augmented with a decent manual. Every other non-sports game I have has a decent manual explaining the philosophy of what it takes to win. Developers seem to assume that just because it's sport and they are on TV then everyone has knowledge. Some gamers won't to replicate the style of play they see on TV (not a dunkfest) but have no idea what a play even looks like. I am quite satisfied with ALLSTAR default sliders and losing because I know when I lose it's because I didn't execute it's not because I thought I challenged the shot but the shooter shot bottoms in my face (with regularity) and I don't know what else to do. This is growing into my soap box issue, LOL

I was having similar troubles with the game until I switched the camera view to the old 2K-style baseline view. That view works considerably better with the controls. I have way less contested lay-ups, dribble turnovers, and pass interceptions now.

I said no because it is as "sim" as any sports game I've played. Just like someone said in another thread.....to play defense you must study player tendencies and DNA, to run offense correctly you must know how each play is supposed to go. I think its just too "sim" for the casual gamer.
