    i can't shoot for crap on All-Star

Please be honest with me here, do I just suck?

I have played 10 games on All-Star, no sliders, and I have only won once. I am shooting around 32% every game and I miss everything from 3 pointers to lay-ups. I am using the Cavs and I can't even score with Lebron. In 1 game I think I was 5 for 28 with him. In another game my team only scored 4 points in the an 8 minute quarter because I shot only 13%. This is really frustrating, do I just suck and need more practice, or does this game really sliders tuning?

By the way, how do I practice my jump shot release? Seems like everyone has different animations but the game doesn't provide the "Early/Late/Perfect Release" help and I can't seem to find a practice mode to practice as the Cavs.

Re: i can't shoot for crap on All-Star

My experience sounds like yours...I play w/ the Hawks and only the Hawks, so I play just like they do. At first I was kind of just running and gunning..resulting in a shooting % of around 35-39% every game. I learned how important it is to shoot shots guys are hitting irl. Like Bibby for example, I can't hit a shot off the dribble w/ him to save my life but when I find him off a double team unguarded he is $. I also started messing w/ the offensive play calling. Running plays the correct way and using the "layup solution" is the best thing I can tell you to do. I usually shot 45-52% in my Dynamic Season depending on how the Hawks played the night before. So w/ the Cavs I would play off Lebron and go to the post w/ Shaq as much as possible. There is a great thread about the layup solutions on this forum. Take a look @ that and good luck dude.

This is a game where you definitely have to put your time in, scouting wise. If you don't study the DNA ratings, you might be in for a tough night shooting the rock. It also doesn't help if you don't play this game frequently; I took about a 2-week break and since I've started playing again, I am also struggling from the floor with every team I use.

Thanks for the replies, i have a few more questions

          1) what does the black circle mean when I run a play? i like how in 2K10 they give you arrows and tell you where to go and who to pass to, it is more beginners-friendly for people like me, in Live, even after I study the playbook I am not sure if I am running the play correctly. any tips?

          2) how do you dunk at point-blank range? I swear every time my Shaq picks up an offensive rebound and he's directly in front of the basket, I press turbo+shoot w/ and without directly stick and he does a lay-up every time instead of a 2 handed stuff. this is killing me!! he has good standing dunk ratings, he's open, and he's right under the basket...so why doesn't he dunk???

besides these annoyances I am loving this game. i just love how much contact, fouls, and free throws you get with layups and moves in the paint. i think i had more free throws in 1 quarter then i had in 1 season with some of the 2K games (bit of an exaggeration lol)

Re: i can't shoot for crap on All-Star

My experience with this game has led me to believe you have to use all the tools given to you if you want to be successful.

When playing on harder levels "Default" you must understand this game will punish you...if you continue to abuse certain aspects of the game.

Kobe and LeBron are great attacking the basket, but not at a rate most people attempt it. the same for Ray Allen, he's a great spot shooter...but you must get him in the post and other spots on the floor to score to be successful.

My biggest step forward on this game has been learning to use the option to become the other players for more scoring opportunities...example

I use the Magic a lot, I'll bring Nelson to right side of the court just a few steps behind the three point line...to create space...next I will become Howard and bring him to the top of the key. Next switch to Carter and get him the ball at the foul line...switch to Howard and sprint to the basket and make carter throw the alley oop dunk. I get this about eight time a game.

Back cuts and layups all day long. No standing around one on one the whole game.

You would be amazed how many more fast breaks you will get.

I too was doing crap on All-Star till I took a look at DNA scouting. I use the Spurs and noticed that Mason was a much better pg for my style compared to Parker, so I made him a starter. Looked at shot tendencies and saw my starters had higher percentages shooting/driving from the right side of the hoop so I moved the ball to the right more often only going left when I had the wide open shots. Like FSU I implemented off-ball control and got many open lanes to the basket. It took all that to finally win a game on All-Star and boy is it satisfying.

                1. The circle means that's where you're supposed to be at. If it's black then that's the last part of the play,if it's red that means there's more to the play. The A button will show up above the person you're supposed to pass to. It'll be gray if you shouldn't pass and then turn green when you should.

                2. Try holding turbo and pressing towards the basket while pressing shoot at the same time? There doesn't seem to be a lot of standing dunks in general though.

Black definitely does not mean it's the last part of the play. There are some plays where if you go to it, there's a whole lot more to do. For example, one of the plays for the cavs in the first set is to post up shaq/Z and when you go around the screen there's a black spot. When you get there you pass it to the man posting up. I believe the black spots represents chances to shoot from. Of course, sometimes the defender doesn't get caught around the screen so you have no shot opportunity, that is when you dish it to your big. If the defender does get caught around the screen, Mo, Delonte, and even Boobie will get that easy 3.

Yep, or you can take the rock all the way to the hoop if your opponent gets caught up in a screen.

I think it's O'Neal Horns Down 5 that I love to run with CLE that I can usually get an alley-oop to Shaq off that play after getting to the black circle.

Re: i can't shoot for crap on All-Star

Guys thanks for all the input. I have won 2 games on All-Star season mode, no sliders, against the Heat and the Knicks (and lost the rest anywhere from 3-15 points, lol). Still I feel the shooting is really inconsistent. Sometimes I hit everything to get a 12-0 run. Sometimes I can't hit jack and the CPU goes on a 12-0 run. I think I read somewhere that the game sometimes feel scripted and is programmed to keep things close so I can somewhat see it from my own experience.

But either way I am happy to say my offense has improved and getting better on defense also. I have to say playign D is really fun in the game. It feels very satisfying when you get a stop. On offense, off-ball control definitely helps. Layup solution definitely helps. But some things still really bother me.

                      1) the CPU on All-star intercepts and steals my rock so much. Playing on 10 minute quarters I get around 15-20 turnovers per game. And these lead to uncontested fast breaks most of the time so basically it is the #1 flaw of my game and why I lose most of the time. Some of it is definitely my fault for passing to tightly guarded teammates. But at other times it is ridiculous. For example, I feel like I can never run fast breaks because the CPU would always intercept my pass as I give to the lead runner. Also I get stripped a lot when I try to post up and back the defender down.

                      2) the CPU blocking. they block in impossible situations. Mo Williams clear path lay-up = somehow blocked by a trailing defender; huge Lebron James 2-handed slam = blocked in the air no fouls; Shaq hook = blocked; fade-away jmper = blocked!!!

The obvious thing of course is to turn the CPU blocking and steal/interception down sliders down but I just want to get your opinions and see if these are known problems with the game or if I'm doing something wrong.

I think what you said holds true: Watch your passes. I am the last guy to give All-Star advice, so I won't, but I have figured out that you can't be cavalier with your passes. The buzzword I always used in coaching was using the "snort" pass-Short and Snappy.

If you saw Lebron James' interception of D-Wade's behind the back pass that led to the game winning free throws last night illustrates that good defenders will be unforgiving, just like that dang All-Star level.

LMAO @ LBJ being good defender.....thats why they had Jawad Williams on kobe and LBJ on Fisher...or in Playoff vs Magic he was on Rafer Alston...on topic, if open shots aren't falling, tweak your release to a little shorter/longer.
