Re: No Buzz....
Ive said this a million times in the Madden forum, Ill say it here one last time. EA sports games will continue to decline in interest until they hire people who care about presentation. I mean, I feel like I am in the twilight zone. I am not a game designer, marketing guy, or anything like that, but its simple, lock solid way for ea sports to turn heads.
Adding an espn banner is pointless if you dont have some type of dynamic commentary, cutscenes, etc.
Look, NFL 2k5 was a good game. I still play it, but did it really offer that much more in terms of gameplay? In my opinion, video game football is videogame football. Certainly there are better animations and some things I would prefer, but in terms of realistically making comparisons, its not night and day when you look at the gameplay between madden and 2k, it was just different and some people preferred it over madden and vice versa. Its like trying to compare Folgers and Maxwell House. They are both coffee and some like one over the other, its as simple as that.
What made 2k5 legendary is its presentation. The fact that EA can'ts ee this is disturbing. They continue to try and sell the gamer on all of these other things.
Its like going back to 4th grade. You have a book report due. You spent a month doing this awesome research project well beyond what a 4th grader should be doing, but your smart and your parents got money so you went all out. you bought this awesome binder, you used top of the line materials such as encyclopedias, you even paid a scientist to come out and proof read your paper. Then you turn it in on notebook paper hand written. You can cry all day to your teacher and say hey this is research beyond what a 4th grader is capable of but at the end of the day, its hard to read because you are still only a 4th grader and your handwriting isn't that good.
It is what it is man. Its a hand written report in an age where everything is typed. You can have the most awesome "tech" an awesome commentator, a million players saying the game is awesome, but when the user turns the game on, or sees it in action, they are not getting immersed in anything brought to us by EA sports.
After seeing the videos of Elite, its official that EA has a presentation problem. When you look at any EA sports title and all of the commentary sounds pieced together and rough, its no longer a Madden problem or an elite problem, its a company wide issue. SOmewhere, someone at this company in a position of power is underestimating the power of presentation.
Throw NBA Today quality presentation into Madden, dont upgrade any game-play elements or anything and see the reaction of the fans. People will lose their marbles over the game. People will forgive these issues that at the current time are unforgivable.
The same goes for this game. Control over your player is cool and an espn ticker at the bottom is cool, but why did you stop there? Is this a broadcast prssentation or do you want us to feel like we are on the court? There is no middle ground. You have to go all the way one side or another. Trying to do both is causing people to feel bored or confused while playing. Its like we don't have all the crazy cut scenes or overlays because we want people to stay focused on the game and feel like they are in on the action and not worrying about stats. Then on the flip side they have commentary, ESPN overlay, etc its like where are you going with this?
The bottom line is that EA needs to enter the era of presentation if they want to end this run of mediocrity across all of their games its as simple as that.
