Re: CONFIRMED: NBA Elite 11 Delayed until 2011

    ReAnimator & Stepsix

Okay I have read through basically all of the pages and this is my summize...at this point the damage is done and there is no escaping the hard fact that this year reiteration of Live (Elite) was a major dissappointment at least to the majority....because of that you have heard a resounding response from us your passionate gamers that this presentation of your product is not acceptable in the state that it is in...

Going forward there are some realities that you have to consider as it relates to the future of your game..

1 Animations are not good what so ever how ever you have been implementing them needs to be scrapped and redone, compared to the competition your animation seems dated and robotic.. we want life like , natural and game contexted animations.

2 Control scheme needs to make sense to the gamer as well as the developer, I like your shooting logic it makes sense to have us imitate realistic shooting animation with the stick as an extention of our hands, bending of joints is a nobrainer, gather is important and momentum is crucial and realistic, blocking needs tweeked alittle still, RTP didn't feel physical enough and the response of the player models came across as generic, we want skills based controls but not at the point of sacrificing realism in the player moments..if that makes sense

3 Presentation is not bad but could be better, I wish you guys would look at incorp TNT & ESPN & ABC sports in comparison with what you were doing with the ncaa 10 college game, that would be nice, crowd reaction and music are good but could be deeper, I don't know I guess for me I feel like if you're going to have those things in the game like refs and cheerleaders and things like that, why not go all out to make them look as realistic as possible, enough of the zombie looking chararcter models can we get some detailed models even 2k could do more in this department.....camera angles are not the best either

4 Plays are not that far off but could use a major overhaul also, especially after what we have seen from 2k this year, haltime shows, post game shows, allstar games, dunk contest, summer league, training drill (bring those back they help us learn the controls quicker) all those thing are a part of the NBA ..I would like those things to be apart of your game....

now what I have mentioned is just some of the things that I would like to see happen for your product, I just can't accept that you say this is real simulation gaming if you leave so much of the simulation out of the game, things like hard fouls , kickball, illegal screens, pulling on jerseys, real injuries, real hair physics, in game adjustments to what the opponent is doing like if a player is beating you real bad or a certain play coaches adjusting to the situation and doing something different to combat the problem....maybe I'm off but things like that will add REALISM as I have stated before, you guys have the money, the information and I guess the personel to get these things done...so as you go forward interacting with the community make sure you have people involved with the game itself as references foremost, they play the game professionally, get some coaches involved they make the plays, get real techs that know how to make the game come alive on the screen, 2k used people from TNT to help improve their presentation and that is making their game look incredible this year.....now maybe you guys are doing some of these things I have suggested maybe not,

bottom line.......if you build it the fans we come back and the money will poor in and the numbers will go up....it's the product quality that controls the bottom line....step up your game EA..!

Weird that they waited until a couple of days before the release of the game. It's clear that they didn't expect the reactions to be that negative, but that might say a lot about EA.

Hopefully they'll scrap the game and take their time to come up with good animations and a game that reflects NBA basketball.

And if it does release this year, what will that do for their development cycle? From what I thought I read they start on the next years title shortly after release so it seems to take a full year. I for one hope they dont tank because we need competition or else we will have another Madden situation.

Wow, EA has actually done something right in terms of not trying to rip gamers off. For all my negative views on EA as a developer and company, I can honestly say they've gained some respect from me by deciding to delay Elite. I wish they were this considerate about other things as well though.

I really hope EA learns the lesson that one year development cycles simply don't work. I hope the entire industry learns this lesson. Stop being cheap and develop complete games. Have parallel project teams. Sure it costs more initially but u don't have to eat the costs of delaying a launch date either.
Cheapness has cost them customers, fans revenues, and sunken proect develpment and marketing costs

I wonder if this had anything to do with them giving away NBA Jam as a part of the package? Maybe they changed their minds (in part) because they wanted to totally seperate Elite from Jam.

Nowhere in the blog did he mention that it'll be delayed until 2011. It may well come out in November or December.

I'm sorry but call it whatever you wasn't but the last nba live title I enjoyed was the one with melo in the cover... IMO live stunk after that & after playing the demo for what they attempted to call elite they didn't change much..the demo is terrible & i sill think it's still going to be garbage..what I didn't understand in a comment made by mr.moore about nba 2k11 in an article I read was him bashing 2k for using a retired player to endorse their product as a bad idea for business... But didn't you use 2 required fighters when you promoted fight night round 4?.... (Tyson & Ali) sons to me more like he knew that 2k had more than the upper hand with this years edition.... I don't care about nba jam when it comes to basketball sims just give me a true sports game that I can enjoy and honestly ea hasn't given me that since carmelo was their cover athlete.

Not 100% accurate but close enough to make comparisons.

I hope this delay lets them add some more sig animations as well as the fine tuning and what not.

                          One request....

Big Props to EA not to let out a bad product. But that EA Canada for you. If its not right , they'll get it right. I just wonder was there a Big meeting with Moore saying the boat needs to be righted for all games not just elite, Sales could be better with a better product. seeing this i would be shocked now if madden 12 or ncaa would have RTP

What's disappointing for me is the entire process we've been through with Elite. 2 months ago, 23 and other people came online after previewing the game and gave fair but negative reviews of the version they played. The videos looked bad too. All we heard from EA was "that was an older version of the game" and "wait until u play the demo before you judge it".

So we did. The demo came out and it had numerous glitches and appeared to be a big step back from Live. So what did we hear "The game is great User v. User" and "a patch will fix most problems". A week later the game is delayed for at least 4 mos because its according to Peter Moore "lacks gameplay polish". My question is what version of the game were the EA employees who raved about this game playing?

I've kept my mouth shut for months about this but today's announcement and subsequent thank yous to EA caused me to speak up. What gets me is that you and I know that if the backlash was just a little bit less, EA would have released the game. In my decade of being at EA, I've never seen a major release demo get this much negative attention. There was 1 positive impression for every 20 negative one.

My point is it took a unprecedented backlash to cause them to delay it and based on the way they promoted and hyped the game before and after the demo, I dont trust that EA would have pulled the game if they werent guaranteed to take a huge loss.
great post and totally agree with u. shamed to think they would charge $60 for this crap.

Elite strikes me as a game made by people with limited knowledge of the sport...the game focuses on the most rudimentary parts of the game (dribbling, crossovers, shooting) and ignores the more complex parts of the game (strategy, AI, etc.)...this leads me to believe that there is not a lot of real basketball knowledge coming from Elite's leaders...i have a hard time believing true basketball fans could've produced a game like Elite.

So, maybe one of their first steps should be to get a real basketball person in there to make sure everything is working like real basketball and to flesh out the AI and strategy so it is more authentic.
exactly, the proof is in the pudding. these guys dont know NBA BASKETBALL like that. if they did ELITE would be a much better game and it would be more SIM like. ELITE 11 is not Sim. nothing about it is.

Well, I'm now quoting your post here Da Throne, because my point in asking "Why isn't Littman here to defend his "vision" for a basketball game?" is more in the vein of what you're citing here, something like the decision to not have players actually bending their knees to jump. Maybe I should've asked that instead in my post.

Like you, I prefer the latter. Because if they just don't know basketball, that's an even scarier thought, and we'll NEVER get anything close to an NBA simulation from them. If they know, but are just "turning a blind eye" then that's the lesser of two bad scenarios.

Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES EVER.... EVER..... EVER..... should a player jump literally two to three feet into the air, WITHOUT bending his knees. Doesn't matter what the goal/implementation is, this simply cannot happen. You've got to respect what the human body is capable of.

Literally for days man, for days, I kept asking myself how anyone who loves this sport & wants to recreate it, can think about that and come up with the "design decision" that it's okay in a bball game. That, and another one that is still confusing me, is the decision to remove turbo, again from a basketball game. An NBA game.

You're claiming "Real"-time physics (keyword "real"), while picking and choosing when to actually respect real life physics. Colliding in the paint? Real physics. Jumping in the air on a dime? Not so much. Under this "vision" this will never look like real NBA ball.

And this is why--for the guy who quoted me--I was asking why Littman wasn't here, instead of the devs (who pretty much have to program the game based on what their producer/publisher's final decision is), defending this game all this time.

Great post man. I agree with everything you said. My question is, why are people thanking EA for this move? I've been an EA supporter for over 20 years. Since Peter Moore took over EA, he has been slowly alieniating the offline consumer. EA's main goal for all their products is online gaming because DLC is a cash cow. I feel for the offline consumer because as long as Peter Moore is heading EA they will continue to slowly alieniate the offline gamer. They don't care about the consumer. The devs were trying to sell us a game that wasn't worth $30. Some of their posts were close to calling the consumer "dumb" because we don't see what they are seeing in their product or vision. EA seriously needs to get rid of Peter Moore before the backlash hit their other products, mainly madden.
