Why the !@#$%!! is there a Take Charge button in this game

... when charges never seem to be called. There's plenty of offensive shooting penalties; half of which seem random - like an excuse to see a cool animation. I do think in some weird way they equal out some, but it's frustrating to watch me have a 5ft. lead on the nearest defender only to have him super-speed up (again, reminds me of Madden) to position for an offensive foul or inexplicably alter my shot (again, I assume to showcase a cool animation). It seems like you set up to take a charge, and the computer either shoves you backwards (skating) or magically floats around you to minimize contact.

I'm trying my best to like this game; I really am. But it continues to frustrate me. I think EA did a fantastic job improving Live, but their insistence on manipulating the natural flow of games infuriates me. It's the EA AI that's irritating to deal with in Madden and it's inane random fumbles, dumb penalties, and super-speed bursts at the worst possible moment, but reaches new heights with Live.

I've tried using the suggestions others have by tweaking the !@#$%!! out of the game. I'm playing from the Press Box cam, which seems to help at least a little w/the insane number of computer scores off rebounds (no sense in even TRYING for offensive rebounds). I've switched to CPU shooting, an idea I hate - but figured it'd help w/the insane computer comebacks from 20pts down (it doesn't). Good big men are more often than not a non-factor in the game.

Again, I'm not trying to come off as unappreciative of EA's effort this year. I think the 10-man mo cap is a stroke of genius, and looks great. The varied animations they have in the game are really good. I have ESPN, but it just doesn't have the sense of excitement Live does in the real game (it's additional modes are pretty cool and far more entertaining though). Sorry, I just had to vent. I've finished exactly ZERO of my past six games for one reason or another - fortunately I turned them off before I felt the desire to hurl my controller.
HBO's "The Wire" should rank as one of the top 10 shows EVER on tv - period

I do not have the problems you have at all. In fact, I find it beyond easy to draw a charge. I don't know what level you play on, but I play on Superstar, so that might effect things. And I have yet to see one of these phantom comebacks that EA is famous for. This is the first year that I haven't seen them, actually.

Well I can actually relate to you. There was one game where I ended up losing by 6 and I missed 4 or 5 consecutive layups down the stretch when the computer was able to come out of seemingly nowhere, bump into me, and alter my shot. I even had to watch the usual big-dunking Marion decide to go up for a half-assed laup on the break, which of course missed. However in the 15 or so games I played, that was the only one where I considered tossing the controller.

This is another one of the things that seriously bothers me about the game, but doesn't really prevent me from enjoying it.

Re: Why the !@#$%!! is there a Take Charge button in this game

Let me be the first to say, if someone already hasn't, that a dedicated "take charge button" is just unneccesary from a gameplay perspective. The "stand there with my hands over my balls" charge taking technique is rarely used by players in the NBA. I'd say that easily less than 10% of all charge calls result from that kind of attempt by the defender. (I am NOT including when this occurs during screens, where the on-ball defender runs over the screener. This happens with some frequency in the NBA, but does not relate to the "take charge" button in the game) This animation/feature should be contextual. If a player is not moving the stick, and some player comes flying in for the charge, let "stand there" animation happen on occasion.

My advice: take a look at the sliders I have posted. I am not here to be pimping my sliders. However, if a lack of offensive fouls are what you are ticked off at, I do get quite a few of them in my games. I almost never touch the "take charge" button on the controller. The reality is, hitting that button makes your imaginary defense box tiny, and the CPU is going to go around you almost every time, certainly more often than If you were playing straight up defense. As long as you aren't moving much with the controller, the CPU will get called for blatant charges with the sliders I have been using.

Thanks for the responses; I'll take a look for those sliders Ray (can you post a link? thx dude). Thought I'd get more "This game is perfect; the problem's with you" type responses. I can overlook the fact that the game is guard/small forward dominated, but I think the most frustrating thing is that EA AI - the computer will do whatever it is necessary to keep a game close.

Initially I thought the pro-hop button was too effective, but in this game it's actually needed to be able to get to the basket. But I hate that there are times when I use it where the computer doesn't BUDGE - yet, if the computer is using it against me, my man gets shoved 4-5ft back w/no foul called, or I get charged for with a blocking foul. I'm sick of the computer being able to do things whenever it NEEDS to do things instead of playing within the natural flow of the game based on the individual player rankings. It just makes things seem so pre-determined.
