Help with shooting

Ok, I'll admit right now I don't know much about basketball, though I always like to play it on vids. I have two questions for you experts out there....

1) How can I realiably connect on jumpshots? I know the theory is to release "at the top of the jump" but it doesn't seem to work as much as it should, especially when I'm close to the basket. The shots seem to hit the far rim on the close shots which makes me think I'm shooting TOO far? Granted, I know the player you are shooting with has an effect on this.... esp cuz I'm using the Raptors (I'm Canadian, eh!) My shooting % seems to be horrible, around 40%...... should this not be higher?

2) when should I use the layup/dunk vs shoot? I know when I'm driving the lane I should do a lay up (which always seems to be a brick BTW???) or dunk. But sometiems when my guy gets a rebound, or is very close to the basket and standing still, I don't know whether to try a jumper or a layup? Either way doesn't seem to work for me either. But I'm trying to get better.

Take someone who isn't all that great of a shooter into Practice mode and practice your shot. I did it with Bosh and it really helped my timing a lot. It seemed to me I had to let go slightly after I was programmed to do it in NBA 2k3 (at the very top of the jumper).

When you start making the majority of your mid-long range shots in practice mode, you probably have it right.

For the shooting, I was having the same problem as well. A good solution is to set the shooting control to 'CPU' and then go into practice mode and shoot. You will then see where the game considers "the top of your jump" on a shot. I was always thinking my shot was at the most ideal release point and it wasn't.

Anyway, this helped me a lot, as when I set the shooting back to 'USER' I was better able to differentiate when to release my jumpshot.

Wow if this was Live 2003 I would say the post above are dead on. But it looks like the people at EA put alot more into this years live. When shooting a jumper the release is different from a stand still and a moving jumper. Different players also seem to have slightly different release points for there shots.
The person who suggest taking players into pratice mode had the right idea. I would suggest you take different people from the Raptors, since that is the team you plan to use. But pratice mode is a little deceptive, if you ask me. You are shooting by yourself, with no defense on you whatsoever. So it just give you a feel for wide open shots.
Start a game and shoot with the same guy you had in pratice and you will not see the same effectiveness you saw in practice mode.
If I were to suggest using practice mode, I would say start with the best shooter on you team, get a feel from him and then start working you way down.
I play with the rockets and find that shooting Js with Piatkowski is alot different then shooting them with Francis or Mobley. I have just started hitting jumpers constistantly with Francis and Mobley, but have been able to nail them with easy using Piatkowski. I still can't hit with Jim Jackson regularly.

I wish they had the ID shooting practice feature where it gives you verbal feedback on your release point after each practice shot.

Another option on this theme is to go into 1 on 1 mode to practice with a hand in your face too.

when you say that the layup button is either a brick or a dunk that is probablly becuase you are being hit when you shoot and are forced to adjust your shot.
