Excellent article for the open minded...

Great comparison of LIVE v ESPN over at IGN.

    LIVE V ESPN

For the mature posters, guys who've played a tonne of B Ball games...I'd be interested in some of your opinions.

No real need for the fanatics either side to comment...

For my own opinion, having played both a tonne now...I'd say the author damm near nailed it perfect. LIVE wins in the area's I agree with, ESPN wins in the area's I'd agree with also.

Thought the summary was great...and damm this game would be sweeeeeeet!

When it comes down to it, the basketball junkie that I am still spends significant time playing both games. If only there was a game that had Live's control, cut scenes, and sound and ESPN's graphics, gameplay, and 24/7 mode. Call it basketball Frankenstein, call it whatever, what I would call it is the best basketball game ever. For now, though, I'll have to settle for this year's winner ESPN NBA Basketball. A fantastic game that combines the fast-break fun with a more sim-edge to the five-on-five. Add in the 24/7 mode and you have a game that's well worth the 50 bucks.

Re: Excellent article for the open minded...

I think the complete article was insightful. I have both games, and have been playing Live much more than ESPN - but I've become increasingly frustrated with the "sameness" of the way the computer AI plays in Live, and the way games play out. That and the way you have to use the same tactics to win regardless of what team you play with.

I think the somewhat robotic feel and less-easy-than-Live control in ESPN kept me from playing it much, but I do think I'll give it an honest try again. I hate that in Live things just seem so pre-determined - it seems the computer decides when runs occur instead of them just happening more within the flow of a particular game.

Graphics I think are almost a toss up, maybe a slight edge to ESPN. Faces/tattoos/body proportion are easily in favor of ESPN, but Live has that EA "bright/dark color scheme" (like in Madden, and the other EA sports games) that makes it's graphics look much more attractive than maybe they actually are. And I think the inclusion of licensed shoes add to the individuality of the players in Live.

    Good article though.
HBO's "The Wire" should rank as one of the top 10 shows EVER on tv - period

    XBL gamertag: d0meBreaker22 (that's a zero)

congrats Steelers, city of Pittsburgh, and Steeler Nation - SIX TIME WORLD CHAMPS

That was a very good read. The combination of those aspects would surely be a great game. IMHO this has been the best year for videogame basketball in a long time. There are so many solid choices with Live, 2k, and the soon to be released Inside Drive. Someone is bound to find a NBA game that suits them which has not been the case for a long time.
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

I totally agree. We can argue about which game is "better" till our faces turn blue, but the bottom line is we got two (maybe three?) really great games. And in the end it all comes down to personal preference.

Absolutely agree. Last year, LIVE had great controls etc...but the gameplay was beyond bad. This year, the controls are again great...and the game itself is very good. Last year 2K3 looked very good and had the game basics right (pick and roll, iso type game) but had some horrible AI flaws and lacked basics like a fast break game, off ball movement etc. ESPN comes back looking much, much better even than 2K3 and with dramatically better AI. ID 2003 no doubt will come back bigger and better also.

It's great we have the choice of 3 good to great games this year

IMO, it's worth buying a console this year just for the NBA games.
